Currently me and the missus live in the Midlands but due to SWMBO landing a job at Cardiff University it looks like a move is on the cards.

We would very much appreciate advice on places around Cardiff to live and to avoid.

Ideally would like a place with easy access to the Uni campus but definitley as out of town as possible and a large garage is an absolute must.

I thought I'd found the idea;l house at Wentloog and then we drove past it. Oh dear!

Oh, and I could do with a job! smile

Sorry,

Fairly flexible and up to about £350K.

A decent size garage is an absolute must but 2 bedrooms would suffice - Need to get our priorities right. smile

2 bedrooms? you are moving to Cardiff man, you can afford a mansion!

For something toward the edge of town i would probably be looking at Whitchurch or Rhiwbina. You should be able to get a smaller house there in budget.

From the properties I've looked at on the net £350K doesn't seem to get much better than a 4 bed boring house with a fag paper between the neighbours.

The suggested areas (appreciated BTW) are suburbia yuck

I was thinking something a little more rural. Maybe village or even more remote. As I get older I like dogs more and people less.

I meant to type wales, not cardiff! Cardiff is relatively expensive and moving out of Cardiff sees you get a lot more for your money.

The Vale (west of cardiff) is all pretty nice (excluding Barry) but fairly expensive too. Big garages usually mean big plots= expensive!

Dinas is nice and has the rail station direct into Cardiff.

Llantwit major is ok i think. plus you have the beach and cliff tops for walks and llandow circuit 5 mins away!

Thornhill/Lisvane, Radyr/Morganstown or Marshfield? But again maybe a little too suburbs for you?

Vale of Glamorgan & the little village of Cowbridge is lovely (but very pricey these day) and also might be a bit of a trek to work.

Thanks. I'll have a bit of a sniff around those on the net.

I can see this is going to be difficult as it looks like the budget is on the cusp of "Meh" and "Oooh, nice"

i think you are right.

But have a look at Dinas, Llantwit Major (if you can cope with the longer commute) or possibly Wenvoe. Wenvoe is not as rural, but is a separate village. It doesn't have much of a village character, but it has quite nice houses.

We did have a quick look at Wenvoe (after abandoning Sully) but we were only filling in time between appointments (interview for SWMBO and me metting job agency plus meeting with a relly who lives near Cardiff but doesn't know the area well, or so he says) so was difficult to get a feel for the place.

Looks like we will need to speand a weekend down there looking around ASAP but now we have soooo much to do in a short time.

Is there much PH meet activity in the Cardiff area?

It's going to take more than a weekend I feel.

What is considered reasonable for the commute?

You mentioned the "Cardiff University campus". I'm sure you already know, but there are a few different universities with buildings in Cardiff and Cardiff University itself is more a city uni than a campus uni. They are spread around a fair bit. Make sure you know where your mrs is working and make a decision from that.

edit - I think there is a monthly south east Wales PH meet. Details should be on this board somewhere.

That budget in city limits will get you quite a nice house but not a big enough plot for a worthwhile garage as well.

Have a look at the south end of Caerphilly - Direct routes to A470 and University campus.

Creigiau may be another option, again OK for the A470. Morganstown or Radyr also worth a look.

Just musing....... Here's a couple spotted on Zoopla:-

Royal Oak Close, Machen. Mountain Road, Caerphilly. Cwarrau Mawr Farm Lane, Caerphilly.

All CF83

Thank you all.

Yes, I know its going to take more than a weekend but it will help a lot if we can narrow the search a bit and weed out the not so good bits and identify the preferred areas.

Apparently Mrs will be based at The Heath (Hospital) as she will be teaching medical stuff.

Areas in Cardiff to consider near to the Heath are: Whitchurch, Rhiwbina and Pentwyn, but as already said, they are quite pricey. Danescourt in Llandaff may be worth a look, but your best options are out of the city in the one of the areas already suggested.

There is a monthly PH meet down west which is about 40 mins drive from Cardiff, and I think there is one in or around Newport as well.

We've lived in that area for over 20 years. Rhiwbina, Birchgrove, Thornhill, you won't go wrong with any of them but as I say, you'll be lucky to get a nice house together with a big garage.

If you want a starting point, ask the agents to see something in 'the Saints' area of Heath - Post war, bay fronted semis. King George V Drive overlooks the parkland surrounding the Heath Hospital so you get a lovely setting and walk to work!

Once again, good advice and thank you.

I think we (me & Mrs) need to sit down and decide upon whether she is happy to commute and what time/distance. By the look of it we would be best to stay North of the City in any case.

Big issue is as I don't have a job lined up and the ocation of job would affect desired location.

So much to consider but I really must look after my P5B and Chim. Or do I sell them for now and buy something else when settled? Decisons decisions!
