Moving to Cardiff (area) - ideas and suggestions
Discussion
If the Welsh Assembly had any common sense (can you see where I'm going with this?), then they would just close it and redevelop it in to a new village / town - It would solve the local problem of very little housing stock available for anything under 3-400k, and bring in far more employment than a ramshackle shed that has been failing since the first time I used it on a school trip some 25 years ago. Nothing more than a vanity project by some empire building muppets who think they know better than the commercial enterprises that have owned it in the past and who were glad to get shot of it! It's a pity, the place is a 20 minutes drive from my front door along some half decent roads, and yet of the past 100 or so flights I've caught, 1 has been from Cardiff. Don't get me started on the 'Circuit of Wales' - even more public funds on a white elephant that will close within a few years.
Anyway, back on topic - If you're not bothered about a bit of a drive (far better than having to rely on patchy public transport), you could do a lot worse than some of the smaller villages off the A48 in the Vale. There are a few nice houses in budget in and around Llanblethian, Penllyn, Llantwit Major, Wick, Colwinston, Sigginstone, Bonvilston, St. Nicolas etc

Some nice places suggested by tpp. Although would say I think you'll struggle to find a detached/spacious plot/large garage within budget in Cowbridge, Bonvilston and St. Nicholas. All of those would likely be commutable though if you can find something appropriate. I'd also agree with previous suggestions of Rhiwbina. It is technically Cardiff suburbia, but it's known locally as 'The village', has a compact but very well stocked shopping street (Heol y Deri) with butchers, bakery, wine shop, deli, indian and Co Op. If you head towards the northern end of Rhiwbina (Rhiwbina Hill/Wenallt etc) it feels very much like the countryside rather than city suburbia. There are some great forest walks in the Wenallt which my dog absolutely loves.

How does a bungalow in walking distance to the mrs work sound Tyre Tread?
Its got a double length garage too
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/prope...
Part of your choice is going to be tough with regards to your preferred choice of not being in the 'burbs and somewhere more rural vs the commute to work for the mrs.
Cardiff is still a rapidly expanding city and the rural areas are being eaten up to accommodate the need for more housing to fill all the jobs still building in Cardiff. This is apparent by the housing developments going up in any area close to 1/2hr commute to Cardiff (areas like Llantrisant/church village/Rhydyfelin)
Good luck choosing an area, and hope you don't mind me virtually spending your budget on a decent place

No issues whatever with you spending my budget as ong as you don't spend my actual money!
I really appreciate the suggestions.
That property really shows how expensive peoperty is in that area. You really don't get much for your money do you?
Buying a house is always a compromise and I think we are still in discussion about what we want/will suit us etc.
We bought our current house 18 years ago because we liked the facts that it is
Detatched
Only got neighbours one side
On an older established development
In a close therfore minimal traffic
The majority of residents were retired (ergo no young children/teenagers playing football in the road)
It was right on the edge of a small market Town (so left out of road and 1/4 mile into town - turn right and 200yds into country roads)
In our price range (albeit needed work)
Almost equidistant between mine and wife's workplace.
We bought it despite the fact:
It had a very large garden (we are not gardeners)
It had a tiny single garage (but I didn't have 2 hobby cars then)
It needed work
It wasn't in a village (which we thought we would have preferred)
I would prefer not to be in the city but it is SWMBO who will have to commute so a joint decision is needed. Where I will be working (or not ) remains to be seen.

Indeed we had a quick look while we were in that area.
The new busilds are unlikely to have the garage or space for one that I am hoping to find but thank you for the thought.
I just looked at the Redrow website out of curiosity, plenty with double garages and there also seems to be some with pretty decent plots. However I don't think they are getting under way anytime soon. The new busilds are unlikely to have the garage or space for one that I am hoping to find but thank you for the thought.

Had a poke around the place yet? We move next Thursday
Not had chance yet in person only in the virtual world - still waiting for the written offer but got the date conf by email yesterday.Good luck with the move on Thursday. Where you moving from?
Thnaks for looking at the Redrow site. Not sure I could bring myself to buy Redrow as I have seen what and how they are building near us and their new development is one of the reasons we are glad to be moving.
Alright actually
Lots to do getting organised of course with lots of boxes in the garage to work through! We're over the moon with the house though. Lovely view out the back over the fields. Funny you should mention broadband, we are actually in a BT fibre area - so I've signed up to their 38mb

What about this

You may need to do something about that enormous step into the garage, but it seems to tick most boxes.
Also, as has been mentioned Cardiff is expanding quiet rapidly at the moment and a huge number of (badly needed) houses are planned - mostly towards the north side, so just be wary that an area that is currently fairly rural might not be in another 10 years (ask anyone who lived in Radyr in the 90's . This is the local development plan map, which you might find gives a good idea of what will/could change. Red stripes are housing.

Thanks Dark85 - that plan is useful.
The house you mentioned is actually the second one I found (the first being the one in Peterstone with the 3.142 Key problem)
I hadn't noticed the step into the garage - wonder if its had flooding problems?
That house id the reason I was asking about Llandough Hill. It looks like the road its on is nice but backs on to some 'interesting properties'!
It's on the list to view though.

The main issue with Cardiff is traffic and getting in and out.
Pentyrch and Creigiau are two villages, within 10 miles.
Lisvane is very nice but on the verge of being swallowed up by housing development.
Thornhill is probably overpopulated now but there is a small development just past that, on Caerphilly Mountain road called Bassett's Field. My mate has recently bought a stunning house with double garage there.
Overall, I would be more inclined to look at the Vale of Glamorgan - Cowbridge, St Nicholas etc which has many villages and isn't too bad for traffic, as, once you hit the top of Cardiff, you have the link road down to the Bay or to the M4. Might be expensive though.
