Hi All,
I have posted this in the Roads forum as well, but thought I might get some local wisdom here too.

If the weather holds out for this Saturday I am hoping to make a trip over to South Wales for a good drive out.

I would like to make a bit circuit from Bristol and aim to make a a few stops, including a good lunch along the way!

Can anyone advise as to a good route to take?
I am familiar with the crickhowell road and some of the passes up near Brecon, but have never been over to the black mountain pass.

Your advice on roads, routes and lunch much appreciated!

The Nant Ddu Lodge does cracking meals - on the main road between Merthyr and Brecon. Watch for scamera vans on the main roads.

I drove over to the A4069 (black mountains) the weekend before last and it was great fun, if possible drive it north to south to make sure you hit 'the' corner the fun way (that's assuming you're only doing it once).
I was there for around 8:30/9am and I only saw a couple of cars the time I was there. It's over pretty quick too but the opinions of others are going to be more useful than mine.

I have started putting a route together, any advice on how to finish off this loop back to the bridge?

What car are you taking?

I find the Black Mountain Pass far more fun (and safe) if you're going Southbound. The steep/narrow bit is hillarious in the Caterham, but the sweeping bit to the South is more fun if you have a larger car.

Will be out in My 2zz converted MK3 MR2.
I've changed the route to now head north after crossing the Chepstow bridge towards Usk.
Up towards llangynidr, the on to Brecon. Then up to Llandovery and down the black mountain pass.
From there on towards Hirwaun and down to Treorchy then eventually winding back down towards bryncethin and home along the M4.

Hope the suns out!

Lots don't use the m4. Come over the old bridge and come off at chepstow. Follow signs for Usk and then abergaveny and Brecon. Then head towards Swansea then follow the end of your route tracking back over the beacons to newport area. The M4 is God forsakingly boring!

As soon as I'd crossed the bridge, I'd head into Chepstow and then take the B4235 to Usk.
Go into the centre of Uska and take the B4598 towards Abergavenny. There's a very nice caff to stop off along here called the Steel Horse and is often frequented by bikers and modified car owners.
Then take the A465 road from Abergavenny towards Ebbw Vale and pick up the B4560 towards Crickhowell or Llangynidr.
Pick up the A40 here towards Brecon, and then the A470 to Libanus. Just past Libanus is a turning for Defynnog & Trecastle (A4215). Take this and then join back up with the A40 near Sennybridge. Follow the A40 to Llandovery.
Take the A4069 in Llandovery, just after the West End Cafe and follow this to Llangadog, and then past Bethlehem (Topical) and up over the Black Mountains into Brynaman.
From there it's a bit of a rubbish road A4068 (Compared to what you've just been on) Towards Ystalyfera. Pick up the A4067 back to Defynnog, and then back over the A4215 towards Libanus.
Take the A470 towards Merthyr Tydfil and turn off after the 1st resevoir on the A4059 to Hirwaun. This will take you near Aberdare, and from here you need the A465 to Merhtyr Tydfil and A470 back to Cardiff to pick up the M4.

This is a very regular day our for me because I live right in the middle of it all :-)

Good luck whichever roads you choose.

Hi, I thought I'd tack my questions on to this, rather than start a new one. I'm heading to Tenby with the in-laws for a few days, what are the good roads around there? Or should I head back to the Black Mountains, my only concern is that it's a long way from Tenby and I'm not sure it's fair to spend a whole day driving whilst down there...

There are a couple of decent roads around Tenby, but not as good as the Black Mountains.
Try the A478 to Kilgetty and follow it towards Narbeth. Pick up the B4313 to Fishguard.

Or the A4139 through Penally & Manorbier. Then take the B4319 towards CastleMartin. While your there pop in the Point House in Angle (If you can find it) Excellent pub. Then the B4320 back towards Pembroke and then the A4139 back through Lamphey and back to Tenby.

The B4314 from Narbeth towards Red Roses and across to Pendine is ok too.

The A487 from Haverfordwest towards Newgale, Solva & St Davids is nice with lovely views too.

That's a couple of short runs if your out for a few hours.
