I'm thinking about taking my son (7 years) on a tide along the Taff Trail. I thought Pentrebach to Taffs Well and I'm wondering if anybody has riden this route and if so how suitable it would be for my son, in terms of safe paths away from roads, upward inclines etc? He's a very competent rider for his age.

Thanks in advance.

It's a pretty easy ride from Pentrebach to Taffs Well.
There is a steepish hill at the end of Aberfan going under the A470, but a nice downhill after it. Pentrebach to the Pontygwaith Bridge (Nice tea shop) is all tarmac, crossing a few roads, but not major and decent visibility when crossing.
From Pontygwaith to almost Quakers Yard is on rougher ground, but nothign to speak of.
Quakers Yard to the otherside of Pontypridd is all tarmac as far as I can remember.
Going through Pontypridd can be busy so be careful through here.
From the bottom end of Pontypridd (Rhydyfelin - watch out for stone throwers LOL) is unsurfaced again but plenty smooth enough.
Cross the main road going towards Caerphilly (Nantgarw Hill) at the lights, and the surface continues down a slow gradient all the way to Taffs Well.
Fagins in Taffs Well would be my choice for a drink or food. Kid friendly and tables outside to sit with bikes if you need to.

Hope this helps.

That's great info, great help thanks.

Is it clearly signposted throughout the section eg through Pontypridd and anywhere else where the trail intersects with other roads etc?
