Hi guys

I need to visit Cardiff on business for a couple of days and will take Mrs 13m with me for some R&R.

A cursory glance at Tripadvisor suggests Radisson Blu or St David's Hotel and Spa would both be good choices for a hotel. We'll be driving but need to be in close proximity to shops, restaurants and so forth.

Can anyone comment upon which of the above would be best, or any better alternatives please? We don't want top-end swanky but comfortable and well-situated is good.

Hopefully once I've been to Cardiff for the first time I'll have a better feel for the place.

The St David's hotel is very nice, it's a large hotel in the bay so potentially a nice view from your window, we stayed there on our wedding night and were kindly upgraded for free on arrival by the manager. There are loads of places to eat and drink in the bay and the centre of town is only a ten minute walk away. The St David's is also a spa hotel so has swimming pool, gym, etc. for relaxation.

The Radisson is fairly new, only about 5 or 6 years old, it's on the edge of the city centre on the south side towards the bay. I've never been in so couldn't comment on it really other than that it's quite new so probably in decent state of repair.

Do you want to be near your business meeting? If so, if you tell us where it is we might be able to suggest alternatives.

The business will be done over food, so providing Cardiff has Carluccios and the like we're good.

My partner and I have stayed at Jolyon's at No. 10 and we enjoyed it. It's more of a boutique offering than the big chain hotels which may or may not appeal to you. We'd certainly go back if we were to stay in Cardiff again.

In terms of location it backs onto Bute Park (I think?) and is only a few minutes' walk to Cardiff Castle.

Parking is limited however so make sure you book ahead i.e. don't expect to be able to arrive and "get" parking automatically.

Marriott or Radisson Blu for me. Both are very near Mill Lane ( Marriott is on it) where there is a nice selection of bars and restaurants if you want something that isnt part of a multi national chain. I highly recommend Bills for breakfast in the morning(s) too!

The Mercure Hotel is also extremely nice, but is a few minutes ( still walking distance) outside of the city center with not many bars or restaurants near it.

all have on site parking for roughly £20.

The future inn in Cardiff is ok and convenient for bars and attractions in the marina.
If you don't mind travelling a bit the vale resort is a bit more up market but still reasonable.

Sadly you may be disappointed with the St Davids Hotel. It's not ageing well and is not as good as many think.

The Marriot on Mill Lane and The Hilton on Greyfriars are much, much better and in town.

I did canvass the opinion of PHers before booking and it was recommended. It fares reasonably on Tripadvisor too.

I seem to recall we booked non-cancellable rooms too!
