Hypothetical at present, but assume you have £35k to spend on wheels... what would you choose?  Must have criteria is:- Daily driver reliability for (6k per year) 2+2 at minimum Performance over economy  Residual Value a factor Current top 3 are:- 1. 997 (Carrera S) 2. RS4 3. Nissan GTR All a bit obvious but interesting to see hear other views

Ferrari 456? Jaguar XKR? 911 Turbo? BMW M6? Mercedes CL?
I'm not suggesting any of the above are preferable to what you've already listed, but all would be a consideration for me.

Hi Paul. Of the cars you listed, I'm (obviously) a little biased toward the Ingolstadt brand  She's been a worthy companion over the last 3 years, with nothing serious going wrong, beyond THAT replacement clutch. If you don't need the rear doors, then I would seriously consider a 997. Although I've no experience of these, my brother has driven both a Gen 2 Carrera 2 and 4 very recently. He told me both offered a fantastic experience. Last year I drove a Gen 1 GTR, finding it a bit of a cold experience. The test route was uninspiring and the saleman never contacted me, despite saying he would. Yes it's stupidly fast, and on paper ticks all the boxes. For me, it just missed something I can't quite explain. I agree with slippery on considering other things. I'm suprised he didn't recommend a VXR8 for consideration, for it's definately a contender. While it may sound a little odd, for about half your budget, you could get a Passat R36. I would, too, recommend AMGs. Finally, what about a Lotus Evora. You can get the N/A version for that money, although it's a bit slower than other things you may consider. C63AMG, Friend of mine just chopped in his old GTR for one and has been very pleased. They do supprisingly good mpg too, another chap I know who commutes in one regularly sees 28-29mpg.
There are certainly some good deals about on the 997 but they can feel a bit dated in some respects. The PCM (satnav etc) unit is really clunky and featureless in comparison to other marques.
For £35K you're going to be in the absolute bottom end of GTRs and it looks a bit scary down there with all the dodgy jap imports, dubiously modified ones and warrenty questions!

Possibly doesn't quite match your criteria but for me it would have to be a V8 Vantage ETA: I'm the fella with the Chimaera that drooled over your Ultima at Clive Atthowes last year

I use mine everyday up and down the small stretch of A11 and into Norwich. I very rarely get above 21mpg. Indeed once into the city it drops to around 17-18mpg. Even on a long run up to Coventry recently via the A11/ A14 etc still only managed 25mpg and that was at a steady 70mph due to having a 'nervous' driver.

Seen it myself on the display Kev! I was rather frustrated because at the time my M3 with an engine 2/3rd of the size was doing 21mpg when driving miss daisy. It was a 2010 car with the PP, its done 80k miles in 2 years though.

Mine is a 2010 with PPP and Drivers Pack which gives the 35bhp uplift so that could be the reason? Mine has done just a smidge under 25k too.... Well done to him for restraint...I find it very hard to control that noise pedal...

For the money buy a VXR8 as they are cheap as chips and then also a Caterham or TVR for blasting around at weekends....sorted...

OP exactly the same criteria i'm currently looking at albeit you've got an extra £5k in your budget.
i'll throw the Maserati Gransport into the mix.
I narrowed my list down to either a one of three Porches (996 C4S, 996 Turbo or 997 C2S) and the Maserati Gransport
The Masearti and Turbo being at the limit of my budget.
Although i must admit the Jaguar XKR keeps slipping into the my searches . . .

For what its worth, I think some Porsches are great cars, 928 (old now, but still great), 911 Turbo/GT3/GT2 and many others besides. There are others I probably wouldn't buy, but we're all different I guess.

There are so many great cars out there for that money that isn't the generic Porsche option, for example a mint late spec Honda NSX-R / Nissan R34 GTR Nur Spec etc. I see more Porches on the road now than any other modern performance car. for me it's the lazy option. I generally like to be a little different to the norm, but granted, each to his own!

Ultima is staying ... also have the Mergane R26 as daily shopping trolley which is staying (forever the lady has determined!). So, extreme performance & weekend fun not needed, nor hot hatch. Tempted to go classic, but I know I'd spend winter weather worrying about the paintwork, rust, reliability etc! Keep the suggestions coming - one thing is for sure, everyone has a different view which is great -and I sure am spoilt for choice.
