At the time of it's last service, mechanic pointed out that the thread on Dad's B5.5 Passat TDI was stripped and that he'd need to consider getting it sorted at the next service. Turned out it needed seeing to sooner, so he plugged it with some DIY kit thing from Wilco.

Fast forward another 2 months and the bloody thing is dripping again. Usual garage can helicoil the sump, but they have somebody come in to do this which works out quite expensive. Is there anywhere in Norwich that has the facilities to do this and who won't charge a shedload?

Thanks in advance.

Drill it to the next size up then rethread it, there's readily available kits to do this at most good motor factors.
If you're handy then helicoiling isn't too difficult to do yourself.
Theres plenty of helicoil kits out there but you'll need to find out what size thread it is.

Yes, I use them for some machining work, but I think there is a guy who does it mobile. May be worth a google

He is indeed, or certainly was.
I was lucky to have access to an inspection pit at my parents house in their garage, so I took the car there and he completed it there.
I guess he might be able to do it of portable ramps if you have no way of getting the car lifted.

I got quoted £90 for a new sump, but they only charged me £23 to helicoil the sump on my Octavia a few years ago. They did it as part of the service and said it was quite a common problem.

All sorted - usual garage turned out to be best price even with having to get someone external to do it.
