The Mrs has found a nice house in the above town as we're looking to move up in that general area (and have been for a good 6 months now).

Does anyone know what it's like there? Much to do, good amenities (pubs, restaurants, local shops etc)?

Any information gladly received.

Thanks
Gary

Didn't you recently build a house in Canford Cliffs/Bournemouth? Moving so soon? Not stalking, but I recently moved up from Lytchett Mtaravers and always read the South Coast part of the forum.

FWIW, I know little of Attleborough, other than that it's much quieter than it used to and a lot easier to get to, thanks to the bypass and other improvements. But Norfolk as a whole is like Dorset was around 20 years ago. A lot more relaxed and 'backwatery'. Poole/Bournemouth got a bit too manic for me in the last few years. I've come home again....

I sold the house I built a few months back Mr Stalker smile

Stayed in it for just under a year but Mrs Garyhun and I are looking for a move to somewhere closer to both set of parents - half way between Bucks and Yorks.

I do know what you mean about manic in Poole and areas. Whereabouts are you now?

Local restaurants are poor to nonexistent, Pubs ok, some good schools in area. Sainsburys in centre of town and a waitrose just up the road. Snetterton on your doorstep which is nice.

Attleborough is an ok town but rather unremarkable. I'd rather live outside it than in it.

Same reason I moved. Well that, and the love of a good woman!

I'm in Toft Monks, just outside Beccles. One pub, no shops. Blink and you'd miss it. Really. What else do you need? biggrin

nooo... the Shapla Tandori is good...but otherwise I agree with you... wink

Attleborough is a small Norfolk market town...there a lot of them about! ...the small shops are handy for day-to-day, and its easy to get to Norwich...a bit like Wymondham which is up the road, only not as posh (Wymondham has a Waitrose!)

I live in neither (no bias), but close to both

...oh and its perfectly located for Snetterton!!!

Hethersett and Wymondham are closer to Norwich but also right on the A11, so travel times south are increased by a few minutes (literally) but are nicer places to live, plus you're closer to Norwich.

There are a some nice little villages around Attleborough: Avoid Watton, Thetford & Diss - all typical provincial market towns with nothing going for them.

Attleborough seems OK, but not much there. Then again, I've only ridden through it once or twice so could be mistaken. If you're a biker, Hood Jeans are based there.

Attleborough is a great little place, I have worked and visited for over 20 years and have now purchased a house just outside in a little village. Great for shops and I's have to disagree with a previous post, there are plenty of pubs in the area along with a number of restaurants.

House prices are solid and Norfolk has risen 14.7% in the last 6 mths so its still a great plce to invest. Norwich isn't far and the surrounding towns and vilages have loads of places to visit, eat, drink etc.

We were up their last weekend. I agree, lot's of stuff around and a busy little village. We found a great barn conversion but a little too remote about 5 miles away.

If you are prepared to head into Suffolk Bury st Edmunds has much to offer. Some very lovely Suffolk villages around the Town if you prefer the more rural feel.

Including the all-encompassing stench of the sugar beet factory that permeates everywhere.

It depends on where in attlebrough you mean i would say you need look area as some definitely better than others same with town centre, a great local Italian restaurant but also some rough pubs! As mentioned in other posts nicer areas in my opinion closer to Norwich as I would say as live in Hethersett but house costs reflected also, some nice villages on outskirts like New or old buckenham but are quiet with may be one pub and shop if lucky

Sorry?! Bury St Edmunds is an absolute hole! It stinks of brewing and sugar beet, and has a dead on its arse town centre and a hideous, soulless retail part rammed with third rate brands on the outskirts of town. It has some average to quite nice (mainly Georgian) architecture which counts for nada against the economic blight and hateful, slow-witted, bigoted people who tend to live there. It's got a good tailor and that is about all that I can think of that's going for it. It was vile when I went to school just outside it 25 years ago and it's even viler now.

No problem, each to their own. Has to be said that your review is not backed by the popularity polls. Bury st Edmunds comes out very well as a good place to live and visit.
I do agree about the sugar beet stink though, thankfully its only occasionally and compared to the stench of farming muck spreading and fertilizer I would say they are on par. I have lived in the countryside.
There is no economic blight in the Town or surrounding villages, all shop lets in Town are fully taken up, multi nationals are in Town with more looking to join them. In addition the Town has the longest main street of privately owned independent shops in the U.K. From high class lighting, clothing, food, cafe's, coffee bars, and more. Bury in Bloom is highly commended and supported by the local business world. And then we have the Abbey Gardens and Cathedral.
Its a great night-life of clubs, pubs, restaurants, theatre's, cinema's and live music venue's.
I don't know when you last lived in the town but it would seem to me that things have changed radically in the 25 years since your school days here.
I suggest your summing up is way off the true impressions that many people have of the Modern and Medieval Bury St Edmunds. (come back for a visit soon, I promise you will enjoy it)
Out of interest which town/village/city do you live?

I think we'll just agree to differ. I now live in London. I last 'lived' near Bury when I was at Culford in the 80s but still visit regularly as my family still live in South Norfolk and one of my nieces lives and works in Bury

No they aren't. There are empty units just like most towns in the UK.

In addition the Town has the longest main street of privately owned independent shops in the U.K.
No it doesn't, that's incorrect. Out of interest which street were you referring to?

From high class lighting, clothing, food, cafe's, coffee bars, and more.
Nothing in Bury is high class. A Philip Browne store and M&S do not constitute high class. Maybe high class in relation to Primark and Greggs perhaps?

Bury in Bloom is highly commended and supported by the local business world. And then we have the Abbey Gardens and Cathedral.
Agree, they are okay.

Its a great night-life of clubs, pubs, restaurants, theatre's, cinema's and live music venue's.
The nightlife is horrific just like any other market town. The clubs are dire and the bars and pubs in the town are full of Jack Jones wearing orange-hued morons chatting up tattooed single mums.

All the shop units are now taken, at least according to the business enterprise of the town. Some may be empty waiting for the new business to move in.

Nit picking regards Primark and Greggs methinks, sadly we can't stop all the low grade but we do try our best wink Agreed its not Kensington in terms of High Class shops. But in context of other towns mentioned it is several notches higher and better all round.

The street I refer is Abbeygate Street, full of individual shops offering a wide variety of goods and services. Amusing that you instantly disagreed with my statement but then ask which street I refer to!!

Your description of the night-life is way off, you must frequent the lower end establishments because where we visit its as good as anywhere if not better. Have you actually been to the theatres, and decent clubs? again the lower end market is catered for but its easy to avoid them.

So where do you live exactly? Are you proud of your Town. Bury St Edmunds is not perfect but its not far off given the state of some East Anglian places.
