The street I refer is Abbeygate Street, full of individual shops offering a wide variety of goods and services. Amusing that you instantly disagreed with my statement but then ask which street I refer to!!

I asked as I was struggling to picture a long street in Bury town - it's tiny. I instantly disagreed because you are misinformed. Caledonian Road in London has the highest number of independent shops in the UK – making up 89 per cent of the area’s stores.

Your description of the night-life is way off, you must frequent the lower end establishments because where we visit its as good as anywhere if not better. Have you actually been to the theatres, and decent clubs? again the lower end market is catered for but its easy to avoid them.

Today's challenge: name a decent club in Bury and for bonus points, what makes it so good? Would you like to name one of the lower end establishments of which you speak?

So where do you live exactly? Are you proud of your Town. Bury St Edmunds is not perfect but its not far off given the state of some East Anglian places.

Yes I am proud of where I live and where it is doesn't matter. Here comes the big irony bus: when I meet up with my mates we nearly always end up in Bury as it's easy for me to pick them up en route. Having spent far too much time going out there I can say with authority it's not the pits (King's Lynn and Ipswich are fighting over that claim) but it is not an appealing place to live. The villages around it maybe; Bury itself - no thanks.

Jeeeez, I thought Bury was great! only moved in two years ago. Shows what a sthole I moved from was then laugh (in case your curious it was near Diss)

ps have you anything you would like to add about your home city of Norwich, aside from your pride in it. Football club is not bad, infact they are very good. Other than that I cannot think of a single redeeming feature of the place wink

Not interested football so feel free to say what you like about the team.

Bury is better than Diss, I'll grant you that. Shall we stop now?

P.S. How do you know I'm in Norwich? It's not in my Profile Info.

Forgot all about this thread, that is until I posted a new topic today asking for recommendations regarding Hi-Fi repair businesses.
Of course then I couldn't resist a look in to see how this thread had developed, disappointed. Anyhow, how do I know that you live in Norwich you ask, well in truth nothing more than a wild guess. Although I did recall you asking whereabouts you could get some work done on your car, in Norwich. The sleuth inside me guessed that you either live or work in Norwich, or both. You don't live or work in Norwich, just happened to be visiting that particular week, so I got it all wrong! Just a silly game really.

So far as the footie goes, like I said, a very good team and important to the City due to the revenues they bring in. Not a particular footie fan myself either.

And Bury St Edmunds is still a fantastic Town wink

I think we'll just agree to differ. I now live in London. I last 'lived' near Bury when I was at Culford in the 80s but still visit regularly as my family still live in South Norfolk and one of my nieces lives and works in Bury
So you were a posh boy at a fee paying school, perhaps you are just a bit snobbish; perhaps it is just as well that you do not live here!

I find these decriptions of Bury as a bit of a hole quite contrary to my experience of the place! I've known Bury since the late 80's when I moved to the area and have always liked it and the surrounding area.
Yes, like any market town it has it's less desireable areas, but on the whole I find it a beautiful town with a thriving market and plenty of good quality, independent retailers. Now you've got the Arc shopping centre you've got more national chains as well.

In my experience of market towns accross the country I'd still rate it as one of the best.

likewise....a pretty decent place i think! if that's what someone considers a 'hole, then they've been VERY spoilt their entire lives, and i suggest they spend some time in Slough!

Or even somewhere 11.5 miles from Bury

I've spent some time in local holes! I've lived in Thetford, Brandon and now Stowmarket!

If you are prepared to head into Suffolk Bury st Edmunds has much to offer. Some very lovely Suffolk villages around the Town if you prefer the more rural feel.
Sorry?! Bury St Edmunds is an absolute hole! It stinks of brewing and sugar beet, and has a dead on its arse town centre and a hideous, soulless retail part rammed with third rate brands on the outskirts of town. It has some average to quite nice (mainly Georgian) architecture which counts for nada against the economic blight and hateful, slow-witted, bigoted people who tend to live there. It's got a good tailor and that is about all that I can think of that's going for it. It was vile when I went to school just outside it 25 years ago and it's even viler now.
Sorry I couldn't not come back to this thread again, for a supposedly intelligent person to write such complete and utter inaccurate nonsense baffles me. I cannot think of any good reason why this chap should say / write such things when it is plainly obvious, to the vast majority of those that know or have visited the town, that the description is so wildly wrong in all factors.
ClaphamGT3 is unable himself to justify the remarks, so why write them!

Anyhow, the real reason for my bumping this thread is to shout out that the Town of Bury St Edmunds has just been awarded a top ten position in a National competition of 'The Great British High Street', just missing out on a top three slot. The competition is sponsored by Tesco, Marks and Spencer, Boots, Costa. From a total of 230 entrants Bury St Edmunds can be rightfully proud of the achievement. Year on year increased footfall in town is noted and helpful if you happen to run a high street business.

We can do without idiots commentating especially when the comments are based upon nothing more what can only be imagined is some far off event way back in time which has caused such bitterness regarding the town.

No bitterness, it's just not as good as it thinks it is. And the beet factory still reeks to high heaven.

No problem, but I am aiming the post at Claphamgti, completely OTT remarks on a town and its people. Your comment regarding the stink of the beet factory is justified, although I quite like the pong whistle
