I lived in a beautiful perios house on the North Brink for a while - never had any problems.

Wisbech - despite the reputation and all the Fenland jokes, never seemed much different to any small English market town. By their nature they have lots of agricultural workers.

If you looking for high culture you won't find it in any market town but Wisbech has some of the best period property I've ever seen and at bargain prices.

Whether you enjoy your time there or not would largely depend on your level of local involvement.

I was commuting to Cambridge at the time, had little to do with anyone local - loved the house and the views and the olde worlde atmosphere at Christmas.

Can't see that happening. No mountains or hills for the rain to run off. smile

Inches from going over the flood barrier 2 years ago apparently.

Can't recall any flooding at all when I was there. Lots of the land is reclaimed from the sea and really well drained - it's very intensively farmed with veg - never saw the fields flooded at all.

Used to wake up and look out my window, across the misty river at the Georgian buildings - stunning.

The mists were something else and the A47 was something else too.

So many cars ended up in those drainage ditches - including mine once.

Nothing that obvious, but the Fens act as a big drain for the whole of the East Midlands.

Fried pigs ears with peas is the delicacy in the square (seriously). I walked around the town for an hour and I did not hear anybody speaking English. (Not that that is a problem, just a statement)

Mind you, the whole of the fens are a bit weird biggrin

Does make moi laugh when people get stuck on the A1101 when its bit wet. There's a reason why the area is littered with water level markers.

Must admit, it's about 20 years since I lived there, but I never once saw fried pigs' ears for sale. Is this a Lithuanian thing?

Jonathan Meades made a TV documentary about the Fens, concentrating on Wisbech, worth a watch (even if it isn't too complimentary) here
