All,

I'll be going to County Hall, Martineau Lane later on this week and trying to google somewhere decent to park, which is close by but not coming up with much.

Any ideas / recommendations?

Cheers

Steve

Haven't they got a massive car park on site?

They do but it fills up quick.

If you're visiting county hall you should be able to get a visitor parking pass from whoever you're seeing and park in the car park closest to the building.

Thanks gents,

I'm actually there for a job interview, so always feels a little tricky in asking for a parking permit as well! biggrin

I am hoping to get there a little before, go for a coffee and get settled etc, hence the looking for something close by.

Cheers

Steve

Think the Rouen Road car park would be your best bet, probably a 15 minute walk away, can't think of anywhere nearby for a coffee apart from Wetherspoons near the Riverside cinema which is a 5 minute walk from the car park (the opposite way to County Hall!).

There's a Costa in the retail park by the station, which is a leisurely 20 minute walk or you could hop in a cab at the station

Thanks all, due to the M25 being its usual busy self, didn't get there with a huge amount of time to spare, so tried the Rouen Road site, which was fairly busy and ended up blagging a parking spot at County Hall.

Cheers

Congrats on your job offer.

There is a saying re Norfolk, NFN = normal for Norfolk !!

There are some lovely places in Norfolk and the pace of life is soooo slow. Norwich is a lovely city.

Thanks very much.

We regularly visit the north coast and broads, and love the area. I'm also mad as a box of crazy frogs, so should fit in well, by the sounds of things.

We're looking for a change of pace from the crazy south east, so again Norfolk should fit the bill!

Will you be based in County Hall?

Traffic around Norwich can be a bit of a pain in rush-hour so try and pick somewhere that's both suitable and easy on the commute

Or live within easy reach of the Park and Ride places.

Well that's been a bit of a busy two days!

Just had a full asking price offer on our house as well from cash buyers this morning, so looks like a full steam ahead move to Norfolk.

We're thinking of a move to rented for 6 months whilst we look for something to purchase, just to take some of the stress and pressure out of things.

Any recommendations or areas or villages to consider or to particularly avoid for renting / buying? We're ideally looking for somewhere semi-rural, good walking close by (two large dogs that need a lot of walks) and probably max of 45 minute drive.

Holt looks nice as does some of the northern coastal towns?

Cheers

Steve

Congratulations on the new job.

We moved here from near Tring 12 years ago now and it was the best thing we ever did.

We ended up buying a place in Overstrand near Cromer so we're by the sea but just 40 minutes from Norwich by car.

We've got 3 dogs and there's plenty of places to walk them

Yes, based at County Hall. My current commute is only 14 miles but takes a good 40/45 minutes at the moment.

The job is going to be a contracted car user, so I'll need to have mine on site I'd imagine. The thought of a park and ride does give me the heebie jeebies as well if I'm honest. biggrin

There's another saying "Too many people, not enough surnames"!

But it's a great place to live. Holt is on the edge of the 'golden triangle' and a but pricy for reasons we never figured. Awful most summer days.

We've been here 6 years and chose to live west of Norwich, quiet, country location but 10 mins from A11, the road to the outside world!

Btw the Park and Ride to Norwich works well but is too expensive to make it useful.

Semi-rural will probably lead you to a small market town or large village - it's all very quaint living in a village with no shops but it's a pain in the backside if you need a pint of milk quickly! I grew up (well, 14-18) in a small village but now live in one of the larger towns which is so much easier.

A few months back I would've said pick somewhere South of Norwich if you're going to commute to County Hall every day, but the Northern Distributor Road has just been started which will be a dual carriageway around the top of Norwich which might make Holt just inside 45 minutes at rush hour.

The North of the county is a bit nicer in my opinion, somewhere like Reepham, Aylsham would be my max distance to commute to the Southern side of Norwich though.

If your dogs don't mind a 10 minute drive to their walk then I don't think there's anywhere in the county outside Norwich, Kings Lynn or Yarmouth that won't have plenty of fields, woods, etc. for them to run around in.

congratulations on the job, and welcome to PHEA smile

commuting by car into the city will be a PITA, unless you can stagger your hours and work 8-4. likewise for the bus, how long do you like waiting?

i live and work in the city (inside the A140 ring road) and commute by bike. significantly quicker than car at peak periods and there is a good cyclepath network here smile

edit: although if youre looking to rent for a while until you get settled, consider south of the city. some decent places are fairly local to the road network on that side. get on rightmove and draw yourself a search region.

an ideal rented place would be on the A146, nice easy route to work. it does get snarled up tho, check out google maps/traffic at rush hour...
