Hi All,

Am catching the ferry from Harwich next Saturday night, can anyone recommend a nice pub/location in the vicinity or en route where we might have a nice meal beforehand, please?

I'll be coming in on A14 to Ipswich then A12/A120.

Many thanks smile.

In Harwich the Pier Hotel is very decent, or on the way try the Boathouse at Dedham (5 mins off the A12) or The Angel or The Crown in Stoke by Nayland (10 mins off the A12).

I would recommend you book the Pier or Boathouse rather than just turn up.

If it's the overnight crossing (we're doing it this Saturday night) - the food in the restaurant on board (not the self-serve cafe bit) is very good and reasonably priced.

I live just outside Harwich.

The Pier in Harwich harbour is short drive into Harwich town, not directly at the ferry port, very nice restaurant which has just been done up and does some very fine dining, they used to have a cheaper walk in downstairs eatery but now it's just the posher upstairs restaurant I think. Check out trip advisor, General impression is that it's quite expensive, eg a side of veg with main is £3-4. I went there a month or so back and meal for 3 adults and 2 kids, 2 courses, with one bottle of wine was approx £100 all in. No complaints on food or service. There is usually some parking spaces free on the harbour front just across the road from the Pier.

Just at the roundabout entrance to the ferry port is one of those Toby carvery type pub/restaurants linked in to a travel inn type hotel. That would be the closest pub/restaurant to the ferry port where you could get a pint and a bar meal type dinner.

About 3 miles from Harwich just off the A120 is the Fat Goose at Tendering, always has a full car park so must be popular but haven't been lately. Would probably have to book.

Much to my kids constant disappointment and if your'e in a hurry there is no fast food joint like McDs or KFC in Harwich, there is a dominos pizza in the retail park at the entrance to the ferry port and a Morrisons that has fairly cheap petrol if you need to fill up and stock up snacks and stuff before the inflated prices on the ferry. I think they close at 8 on Saturday evening.

Also if you're coming down A14 then A12 from ipswich to Colchester before turning off onto A120 to Harwich there is Milsoms just off the A12,on the Essex/Suffolk border; always some tasty stuff in their car park as well, occasional supercar, RR, Maseratis, Porsches, BMW M, Audi RS type cars!

Quite a few pubs in Dedham as well which isn't very far off the A12.

There is only one pub to go for in Harwich! The Alma Arms. Great food and beer.Apart from the 'normal'menu they have a steak menu.Different cuts at different weights.Buy per weight. Also lobsters at a buy by weight. All on chalk boards that get crossed of as sold.

If you take your food seriously you might like The Thorn in Mistley: http://www.mistleythorn.co.uk/

NB I think The Pier Hotel is owned by Milsoms hence why not cheap.

Wow guys, thanks very much, I think I'm spoilt for choice.

I think I'll wait and see what time we're able to leave home, and then depending on weather may take a run through the countryside of Suffolk/Essex (?) and take in one of the country pubs mentioned, or if we don't have time/weather we'll press on into Harwich, which looks like it offers an interesting little walk. I think both the Pier and the Alma Arms looks interesting.

Thanks for tips, it's what this site is best at imo. thumbup

The revamped Pier isn't worth it, IMHO. They've splashed a bit of paint around, fitted the slowest lift in the world and converted the great downstairs 'posh chippie' into a shiny bar with a wky name.

Worst of all, the service in the upstairs restaurant is appalling. They've staffed the place with cheap, indifferent college kids, yet ask top notch prices. You'd truly get better care and product knowledge in Maccy Ds.

Long Melford, Lavenham, Hadleigh, Kersey, Dedham, Flatford - all worth seeing if you have time to get off the dual carriageways.

Thanks, I had pretty much come up with that route, but thanks all same. thumbup

Turns out the Crown in Stoke-by-Nayland is owned by the brother of someone I know.

However we're setting off well early, weather forecast isn't great, we stopping at a National Trust Bury st Edmunds and will make s decision then, but now I have some proper information to go on. Thanks for all the help chaps. smile

The Crown in Stoke By Nayland and the Angel opposite are good shouts. However if you're coming down the A12 they're a little off route. Especially now they've closed that particular junction to Stoke By Nayland. As said above take the scenic route if you have an hour to spare (Bury St Edmunds>Long Melford>Sudbury>Lavenham>Hadleigh>Stoke By Nayland)

La Tolbooth is another great shout and just off the A12 so nice and easy if you don't want to add lots of time.
