pawsmcgraw..... good info... and not half scary...... such a shame that NZ has so many deserted roads but the anti-speeding tirade seems to label all speeders as unsafe, all the time and sets out to gather revenue where it'll hit speeders the hardest, on wide-open country lanes, almost devoid of traffic, whereas outside our schools at 3pm the "soccer moms" driving their 3-Tonne Range Rovers at 50km/h are a far more of a speeding danger in reality... mind you, when was the last time you saw a cop around THERE? To be honest, the latest speeding campaign has made me change my speeding behaviour..... I don't speed any less, but am just that more alert when I do.... but that's bad, looking less on the road and more at the speed signs (30+ speed changes alone between here and hamilton.... a FINE place to catch someone unawares) and also scanning the bushes for unmarked scamera vans.

Keep it sensible and safe out there people..... just take heed in the knowledge that I've been a regular speeder for the past 7 years in NZ and the only time I've been done was one time when I wasn't even INTENDNIG to speed..... damn automatics and their infernal lack of engine-braking!

Have a read of that. I can barely believe my eyes! The NZ POlice openly saying that they are NOT to be devious little pricks when enforcing the law?? Unreal.

Yeah I read that, although the line between "concealed" and "visible" are going to be vrey thin and I can imagine that the moment that a copper starts getting behind on his quota and needs to bump it up, he'll be interpreting that regulation as liberally as it suits him.... will wait to see.

Great info, have decided that plodding around at 99kpm in the 100,s in the Viper is the best way of making my point and making the investment in speeding radar as waste of Gov money.P.S.Been told today that C.D,s on the front of car or dash screw up the radar lasers!,any truth in this?If so then i,m off to buy a load of C.D,s no one wants and a pot of super-glue!

Nope - that'll do the exact opposite - it's an urban myth.

i was out cycling the roads today, as i'm a keen roady, and i was stunned at the sight on highway one!
There was a mazda 626 parked on the roadside, blue, loads of teddy bears in the back on the parcel shelf, a couple of cushions and a big checked blanket.Even had the cheesy self addition mud flaps with reflectors on them(i turned round for a second look!)and it was a speed trap car, with Mr Plod sat inside, all the measuring gear on top of the dash. What lengths will they go to now eh.This was on the Gore to Clinton section of sh1.
Anyhow, just chatting online to a friend in Inver's and he was telling me they have a 1980's mini set up with the same gear down there......unreal.
Give the chap credit though, it was a 50kph zone where he was and i went through at 60 on my bicycle on the way back, he just smiled.

they are crafty down there alright. Last xmas when I was down I seen crapped out vans on the CHCH - Timaru stretch and really these vans were really rough. Long gone of the days where they were generally seen in white Toyota Camry wagons

BTW you were going 60kph on the bike? I can only do that going down hill mate What gearing you got on that thing? I am a cyclist too more into tri stuff, you show me yours and I will show you mine lol

21/11 rear, 58 front!
Hey, 60 kph is just sprinting speed, downhill i've done 110kph and 112kph on gravel on a MTB in Chamonix.
I did average 49kph on an 70km time trial recently but i had a really good tail wind.Without a wind it would have probably been 39kph.
Keen to get a ride on the Tour of Southland next year....no place this year, shame.
So whats your best?Swim, bike or run?I can't run or swim to save me'life.

Totally off topic where this is heading...but all I know is that your flipping fast. I am not sure what my top speed is, I will check my computer - should tell me. Sorry have only just got into Tri stuff recently and booked a few up coming events, on a small scale, not iron man stuff, hence no real times. My bike is a Softride with Ultegra components. Apart from the crank and wheel, which I have the replacement, just to get it fitted. HED disk coming and tri spoke for the front to be used on race days

And yours mate?

Thats a funky bit of kit!Never seen one with that type of seat tube set up.Not a fan of disc wheels though, unless your a feather lite and don't have huge power as i've seen too many broken ones.Just like the new carbon rims and hubs...80kgs maximum and 3000kms,then throw them away.Sod that!
Anyhow, i'm currently training on a 2005 Trek 5000,different bars, seat, post, cogs, and tyres.(got it early because of insider help from Trek and had it flown over)All carbon and weighing 7.4kgs.
Waiting for an SSL!
I MTB on a Fuel 100 frame, full XTR shimano apart from Rolfo rims, hayes brakes, Thompson stem and posts and Azonic bars.
If your new to triathlon and cycling whats your knowledge on tyres?I found they are now the biggest contributing factor to a good average speed,it pretty deep a subject.

Wow I know what your bike kinda looks like - they are the business alright. 7.4kg is a good weight for a bike. Tyres yes I have spoken to quite a few retailers who stock various brands and they all say their brand is best - buy mine, but when I changed my tires with Bike Barn they had a bit of trouble finding me some tyres as I have 650c wheels. They came up with Vittoria Rubino Kevlar ones. They are more a open road, all conditions tyre. Any recommendations greatfully appreciated
Cripes, nobody told me about carbon eventually breaking up after while. I weigh quite a bit under 80kg so I am safe there. Do you think I am better off just using what I have. They are Rigida DP18 deep profile rims - very light as well.
My bike with out acessories weighs in at 7kg. Its a small frame, the beam is all carbon and the forks. Softride is manufactured in the states, many people just import their own. They are very expensive but worth every penny. I tried out quite a few bikes and all felt like my back was going to shatter to bits. Plus many very jittery over small road imperfections. I got this bike through a friend who was selling it locally as he out grew the small frame. Its designed to have a suspension system to keep the power down going along bumpy roads and more tread on the road when going round fast corners. They have various models of the softride for peoples abilites. This one is middle of the range - can be used for most things. Its very quick and seems streaks ahead of my bike buddies. I am a long way off getting my avg speed up to your level though, you sound like a pro
BTW feel free to email me off line. I need to be lead in the right direction by the sounds of it.

Pro.....hahahaha, the guys and gals i train with would roll on the floor laughing at that.I do however train with this years masters world champion Sue Roy on the odd day.
Interesting to see someone riding 650c wheels, i've done that myself on the mtb on a long section of tar seal.
As for carbon breaking, i could show you many failures, one of my own too.My rear triangle failed recently but i do give it a hard time.Trek give lifetime warrenties so they will always replace them with current spec.I've also seen carbon cranks, bars and seat stem break. The seat post was quite bad as it caused hospital treatment!!
You have to treat it for what it is....very light and flimsy.Every one wants to climb on a 6.8kg bike but no one wants to descend on one(mr Colnagos words)
Its true also that most damage done to CF bikes seems to happen in transit, not when riding(road bikes)
If your only time trialing or racing it and not training on it i'd go as light as possible, every gram counts.Especially wheels, the one thing that slows you is the gyroscopic effect and weight to accelerate the wheel.I can feel the differance of wheel weight when riding, its like someones thrown two full bottles off the bike when on sub 1kg wheels.
I'll dig out some tyre info for you when i get chance as i've learned lots in these last few years(not to ride michelins as i had 4 explode in less than 2000kms).....happy riding
I hear to that bontrager xxxlite wheels for 2005 are the lightest wheel available to date?

Well there you go I say no more who you train with
I am an ex mtn biker when I lived in the south island had a Bauer extreme III, was the business. Did a few races around south canty. So am not too shabby cycling hills and stuff. I will be working on my boat speed now though :hideswithshame:
Are you able to tell me your thoughts and experience on the 650c wheels v's 700's? What would I gain going to 700c wheels on another frame?
