Here's another one within 4 years, looks like not even a year!

Are other SIV's, not just the LHD permits, going through the loophole?
Time for an amendment of the rules because it's not effecting the importing dealers, just the consumers.

Are there any consequences for a new owner should it get through the change of ownership?
Seems it's not flagged up anywhere, no permits needed so change ownership online and job done?
No longer a problem for the previous owner??
When, if ever, will it rear it's ugly head?

I'm not going to go into details here, but there is now an exemption process that imposes conditions on both the seller and the buyer, and it isn't automatic either.

Are permits granted on a first in first served basis? I.e apply on jan 1 to be guaranteed to get one. Or do people who missed out on previous years get priority?

Also, can you edit the form to change the car you want to bring in within the 6 months that you have been issued one for?

Thanks!

All gone for this year, and if you want to be considered for next year you have to apply after 22 December this year. They'll return anything received earlier than that. Otherwise, it's first come, first served. No priority for anyone who missed out this year - they'll have to apply for next year at the same time as everyone else.

If you get a permit, it's for that exact car so if you change your mind you'll need a new permit. With the pressure on numbers and the rate that they're being issued, my advice would be to choose carefully the first time smile

Thanks for the reply mate!

The problem I see is that to get a special interest vehicle permit you must fill out a form which states the vehicle model and year and even vin number. The issue is that how does this accommodate someone who wants to buy a car in the uk to import here for their personal use? If you buy the car first you could easily end up denied a permit. And if you try get the Permit first you can't because you need to fill in the vehicle details to get it.

Is there any latitude at all regarding this or any way around it?

Nothing stopping you getting in touch with the permitting people with details of the type of car you're looking to buy. They'll be able to tell you whether it would qualify for a permit, so you could then buy a particular car and submit the application safe in the knowledge that it would be issued (assuming you get in early enough so they haven't all run out).

It seems dealers have a 'way around' the LHD permit issue for selling within 4 years.
A couple I've enquired with have suggested it'll be straightforward - one dealer will do it for me;

The car has a permit now for the LHD. We apply for a new one in the new owners name. Regards Mike

I spoke with NZTA and despite being unsure - they eventually said not possible, even though the seller says he can do it!

Is this the same with non LHD, in the SIV world as I've not been there.

It is indeed not possible: permits cannot be reissued. A few exemptions have been issued under special circumstances, but there has to be a very good reason to do that, and there are conditions. There certainly isn't a special process for dealers to use, and anyone who tells you otherwise is full of it.

I'll have to stop moaning about this
I guess it pisses me off to see dealers blatantly disregarding the rules and appearing to be getting away with it and the innocent buyer having problems later on.

I think a few of them might still under the impression that they can get permits reissued. That was being done (erroneously), but it was stopped several months back. A dealer making such promises should get a nasty shock when they attempt to follow through with it...

When would one expect to hear if successful for a 2015 SIV?

Normally 10 working days, but they'll be snowed under at the moment.

They wouldn't have even looked at any of the applications until the agency reopened after xmas on the 7th, at which time they would have been faced with about 5 months worth of 2014 applications that would have all came in at about the same time as yours. And there's only 2 staff processing them, so there will be a backlog.

I'll get an update from them on Monday and see how they're getting on with them.

They've pretty much cleared the backlog apparently, so if yours hasn't been done yet it could be that they are awaiting further documentation/information from you. It might pay to give them a call and ask in case you've missed an email or something.
