Thanks for your help so far.

SIV approved! Now have to get it registered for the road etc. - next week hopefully.

So with that backlog and only 200 permits I wonder how many are left for the next 10 months of 2015... any idea 'uncinqsix'? I'm sure it's been said internally in NZTA, but the system needs an overhaul of some sort - only 10 Camaros per year might free up a few!

Apparently dealers have brought in enough vehicles to take up years worth of permits, which may mean that it's best to bargain hard and buy an already imported car, subject to permit of course.

There are still a reasonable number of permits left at this point, but as always they are quite popular. There has been some discussion about the system, but any overhaul is well down the priority list. Sorry.

I suppose if you wanted to bargain with a dealer for an already imported car, the best time to do it would be straight after the permits run out for the year, and then hang on to the car and apply for the next years batch...

So as I understand it that means you can import a vehicle without permit....How would this apply to say a track car that wouldn't be used on the road.

The permit is only needed if you want to register the car for the road. You can import anything you like for the track.

I've had my DUTTON (lotus 7 rep) in my garage for 7 years now. Fighting shy of the LVA process and the lack of tracks around in Nelson where I am to exploit the fun of the thing. But I wonder if this scheme could provide some sort of short circuit? The obvious first hurdle is that as its such a low volume car it is very unlikely to have appeared in major publications as a 'classic' ..
Anybody have any comments on whether its worth a go ..?

Did Dutton ever sell fully-built up cars? The SIV permits are for production vehicles, whereas the Dutton is termed a scratchbuilt which would need LVV certification.

I am considering ordering an Ariel Atom and wonder if it can be registered by applying for a SIV permit. After so many years, the annual quotas remains at 200, wonder if there is a long queue of people trying to apply for it still.
