Hi all,

I have done some reading up on importing a car into NZ and just wanted some clarity from poeple that have gone through the process. In short I imported my Lotus Elise S2 from the UK to Perth Oz 18 months ago and have now been informed by my employer that I will most likely be heading to New Plymouth in the near future.

I believe that if I import the car to NZ and sign off that I will be keeping the car for a minimum of 1 year then I do not have to pay Tax on it. True / False

The Elise is a 2003 Rover K series engined model, will it pass immissions?

I really do not want to sell it in Oz as it holds centimental value, am I being an idiot?

Any comments both pos and neg appriciated.

Thanks

True was my interpretation of the rules but turned out to be false when I bought my TVR in.
It wasn't so painful though - if you do need to pay tax, it's a bond payment so you get it back after keeping the car a year.

You should be fine bringing it with you as an immigrant vehicle. GST is either not charged or is charged as a bond, which is refunded after you've been here a year and are still in ownership of the car.

So long as the car is safe to use on the road (not rusty, bent etc) then it'll be a doddle.

Talk to Ken Woodburn at KW Historics in Auckland. He handles the compliance process for a small fee on your behalf, and it's worthwhile doing as he's done the same for dozens of Lotuses and knows all the ins and outs and has all the relevant paperwork to ease the process.
