Hi all,

Looking for some opinions - I am looking to return to NZ after 9 years in the UK and I am split on whether I should sell my car in the UK or import it to NZ when I return.

It is a 2006 BMW 335i Coupe, 55,000 miles on the clock.

I love the car, but am not sure its worth the hassle going through the import process, and I have heard the Police in NZ enforce the speed limits in a more "enthusiastic" way than they used to back when I lived there (left in 2006). This would probably hamper my ability to enjoy the performance of the car, maybe make it more of a garage queen. I am also concerned about running costs for BMW's in NZ, particularly if it is an import.

Wondering if I am better off selling it here and just picking up a cheap cruiser in NZ.

Thoughts?

I'm considering doing the same thing when I return to NZ in a couple of years. I don't have a car at the moment though...
I reckon taking over something special, with a large value difference, would be the way to do it.
A Elise, TVR, M3, 996, for example are all much cheaper in the UK. So there is potentially a bit of money to be made in the long run.

You're right about speed enforcement, but most NZ back roads have very few police.
I often drove Wellington to Taupo and back without seeing a single cop.

Do your maths carefully. Possibly not these days. at 0.52p to the dollar, cars like Elises were pretty economical to bring over. Nowadays prices in NZ are pretty line ball with the UK. Porsches / BMWs are probably worthwhile bringing over if it's something quite new. If it's older, probably not.

Yeah seems not worth it for my car. Guess I will sell here.

Thanks for the replies.
