I've landed a position in Faversham, starting in the next 3 weeks.
I'll be working night shifts for at least the next 6 months, so commuting won't be too much of an issue from a traffic perspective. However, I'm looking for some suggestions on places to live:
- within 10 miles or so of Faversham
- decent area but not ridiculously priced
- parking won't be too much of an issue
- reasonable amount 'going on' - don't really want to end up in the middle of nowhere - cafes etc nearby would be nice
- chav free
- would be nice to know if there's a local PH group meets / drives etc close by
I don't really know anything about the area, other than Canterbury being nearby and having stayed 1 night in Whitstable a couple of years ago.
Any suggestions welcome.

Hi Mate, I dont know the area very well but it is fairly rural round that area, how about trying to find some accomodation on one of the farms maybe ? could be cheap digs for a while and always something going on.

Thanks mate.
They're sticking me in a hotel for a couple of months, but I'd sooner find somewhere to live.
I'm likely to go for a flat share or something similar, so something rural is likely to be limited - plus I'm after something a bit more lively.
Nice fleet of cars you've got by the way.

I live the 'right' side of Sittingbourne and it is great. Plenty around you, supermarkets, road links. Town is a bit old school, pretty much everything shut on a Sunday. The other side of town has dubious parts, lots of pubs in town too. Between Sittingbourne and Faversham the most major town is Teynham, not bad again, good chippy, post office and a few shop, co-op etc, other than that most places between the two are small villages. Whistable will be expensive and if in town parking will be an issue too.
Happy to give my opinion on anywhere you are looking. I ride my bike between Sittingbourne and Faversham a lot so know a lot of the area. Even if you do go for something in the country you are not very far from a major town.

Canterbury is very close and they've recently built a lot of flats on the outskirts of the town and sittingbourne is only 30 mins down the A2

Might look towards Canterbury then. I don't fancy somewhere too quiet and cut off.

Faversham itself isn't bad. The Brents is expensive, but apart from that area, there's plenty that's reasonable, for a town that's easily within commuter distance of London.
Canterbury prices are buoyed by the universities, so may not be the best idea, but Ashford is also within striking distance - and the A251 used to be a cracking road on a bike, before the speed limits were extended.

Get a copy of the Kent Messenger (Ashford edition). Plenty of rental property for you to browse.

Faversham looks quite nice in places, but i dont know it well enough to comment properly

It's still a cracking road on a bike, first ride out of the year today. Much fun was had. Also the road from the Halfway House roundabout back towards Chilham is great fun too, just be mindful of the deers when you go through the short wooded section.

I'd go for Canterbury if you want a bit of 'life' Faversham is a very pleasant town but I wouldn't call it exciting. Whitstable is VERY fashionable because it used to be quaint. Herne Bay is a nice old fashioned seaside town but not very lively. I wouldn’t live in Sittingbourne personally, but there are nice places all around the area. Ashford is quite good for getting to Faversham and is well connected with trains up to London etc but a bit more of a distance, and personally I don’t like it much there. Do not move to Sheppey if you want some life (sorry if you are reading this and you live on Sheppey). I lived in Canterbury for about 10 years and visited Whitstable nearly every week but it has become a bit of a victim of it's own quaintness. I now live on the South Kent coast in Hythe. Not a lot happens in Hythe, but Folkestone is OK for some stuff. Too far away for you though.

Saul, your on the money with sheppey, and ive lived here over 20 years now! I will escape one day, but in the mean time its cheap enough for what you get, and you can escape easily enough
