No, they are not, they would need to tell us they are operational.
How would they do that then? Once they are approved for operation they will just be used without warning. They only put up signs saying they aren't operational yet (or blanked out speed cameras logo signs), once they have gone they are being used. The police also have the ability to have them switched on even when not enforcing the variable limit so I wouldn't be so sure you are safe to speed through them at any time.

Nice attitude, not sure you could have been more condescending.

I've read it but as with loads of threads here people dip in and out so I was just summarising and expanding on the message in the original letter as it was relevant to the query about operability.

How about concentrating on responding to the query about how you think they would tell us they are operational?

I've tried to, however this thread went west to the point where I've tried to get it deleted.

To summarise re GANTRY CAMERAS for VARIABLE limits ( not SPECS or otherwise)

They are there
They are not on
Highways agency are debating if they will turn them on, as yet they haven't decided.

Not sure where you are referring to

The gantry camera on the m20 between the bottom of bluebell hill & detling hill is used when the variable sign is off
Got caught 101mph in August while no variable limit active

You mean SPECS camera, which, no, I am not referring to.

Give me strength.

The poster above is referring to the gantry cameras on the controlled section of the M20 between j6-8 which most definitely do appear to be working on a regular basis. I have heard of people getting a ticket too.

Im obviously missing something here

The camera that got me was on the gantry which is also fitted with the variable speed limit sign system which wasn't active when i was caught, are you saying there are 2 sets of cameras on the gantry or just that the speed the cameras go off is not adjusted for the lower speeds??

Yes, the variable limits are not policed, however there are two sections ( either side of the bridge ) that have gatsos for the NSL.

Travelling Southbound on M25 in section after M2 junction this morning cameras on northbound side were flashing off on all lanes more or less continually - average speed signs were inactive!

That'll be the speed cameras for NSL, not variable spped cameras,

Does anyone actually read this thread before posting? or should I rename this thread "post your random, incorrect observations about speed camera on the m25" Seems more apt.

Geeez.

No it's not - it's the same cameras but sometimes they are turned on for NSL trigger by the police and sometimes they are just left to function when the variable speed limits apply.

Get your facts right before you start criticising others.

They are not operational as variable speed cameras yet but they can function as NSL cameras. Once they are allowed to operate as variable cameras they will perform both roles. Same equipment, dual role (once approved for Variable use).

Had the letter through this morning, 57 in the 50 on the tunnel approach at 5:40 on Wednesday morning, will wait and see what's offered but hopefully speed awareness course.

variable limits to be enforced in Essex shortly, but not unless lower limit is showing on gantry, these cameras DO NOT enforce the national speed limit, only the variable limits when shown.

Not to be confused with the cameras on the Kent side dartford crossing approach, live for 60 and 50 limits permanently.
