Need some advice from those who might know...

I've never driven in London before, never needed to, never wanted to. Anyway our van got recovered to a gear box specialist just outside Dartford in Erith where we had a recon box fitted. Driving home, I was unaware that we were in the LEZ and as a result have been hit with a hefty bill of £250 if I pay within 14 days. If I had paid in the first place it would have cost me £100 for the "pleasure" of driving the 2 or so miles out of the zone.

OK I appreciate that ignorance is never usually an excuse but wondering if anyone has ever won against the system? Is it worth while arguing the case or should I just suck it up and pay the fine?

Before upgrading exhausts on one of our lorries we were collared and got a first time offender warning.

Having had the vehicle recovered into the LEZ I am sure an appeal explaining the situation would be productive.
