Interesting that today and yesterday the speed signs by the outside lane show 50MPH and are uncovered but the signs on the inside lane which on some also include the picture of a camera and are still covered up. so are the cameras working or not and can you be done for speeding if you receive a notice through. I took caution and stuck to the 50MPH while others were wizzing by.
Was about to start a new thread in SP&L about this - glad I did a search and found this thread. Interesting to note the proposed carriageway widening. At least that reassures me there is an underlying reason. However, as mentioned above I'd be very concerned that this 50 limit remains even once the roadworks are over.

With regards to the current set up - WTF is going on? Such ambiguous signage as you say Graham. I notice as you enter the A13 from the slip roads there are 'Average Speed Camera' signs but again these are painted over.

It seemed to me that a decent proportion of individuals (myself included) were erring on the side of caution and sticking to the 50 limit.

My feeling is that it's probably not active yet. I didn't see any terminal signs as the 50 limit commenced.

I'll stick to 50 though...just in case frown (Can't trust the bds tbh).

I noticed that as I exit the M25 after the tunnels onto the A13 going towards Dagenham the few 50 speed camera signs were sprayed up until Thursday, however the spray was removed yesterday and there is also a contradictory national speed limit sign between the 50 signs. Furthermore as you join the A13 from the M25 there is no big sign that you are entering a 50 zone! This meant I had to reduce my speed from 70 to 50 immediately yesterday when I saw the first 50 sign which comes after the rear view facing cameras!

When driving back from London on the A13 on Friday last it was clear that some of the speed signs had been cleaned off to reveal the 50 MPH limit, however, some of the signs were still sprayed with a grey paint obscuring the limit,...... confusing to say the least!

Took their time! rolleyes

There really is a 'fk you' attitude to the motorist. Typical half arsed road management and of course we have to accept it.

Anyone have any updates on this? Still a very confusing picture with 50mph signs highly visible but with the average speed limit signs painted over and national speed limit signs still showing on some lamp posts.

I drive the A13 eastbound in the morning and westbound and very rarely meet any traffic so it's very annoying having to crawl along at 50 on a clear 3 lane road. I've erred on the side of caution so far and stuck to it but most cars are still flying through at 70+

Was passing by the Thurrock/Grays area yesterday and it was my first time seeing those Average Speed Cameras (Rear facing) and also those 50mph speed limit signs which was really annoying! It always used to be National Speed Limit in that area and I was passing down at about 90mph.. Not sure if they were working of not as when I was heading eastbound I saw the cameras, and some of the signs were covered up. When I was coming back westbound into London, I saw a sign saying 'Camera not in use' so hopefully it wasn't working for both sides!

Anybody have any updates on these new average speed cameras?

According to the website below "The new speed limit and associated camera enforcement system is scheduled to be introduced in December 2014 in advance of the main scheme works in early 2015."

http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/road-projects/m25...

Looks like they are running behind schedule as the 'camera out of use' signs were still up this morning.

Does anyone have any more info on this situation? Today was the first time I'd travelled down the a13 in a long time and I joined it at wennington Southend bound with no indication of any change. There was still a national speed limit sign on the roundabout by the slip road. I drove down it as I had previously with no clue the limit had been changed to 50, until i saw a small Sign on a lamp post on the inside lane with the camera Picture and a 50 on it. I then saw the classic yellow cameras in the distance and immediately slowed to 50. Was this too late? Friends of mine say as recently as a few days ago there were signs indicating they are not yet active, and with such inadequate signing as you join the a13 from the slip road surely they can't be in use yet? So confusing. If these are the first cameras I'm sure I am fine but I don't know over what distance you are measured or how long I was driving before I saw the first 50 sign.

The cameras are either side of the M25 junction, but haven't been switched on yet (if the 'camera not in use' signs are to be believed at least!). Most of the camera signs are also still covered in grey paint, so you should be fine. I think they are switching them on at the end of Feb.

I was in and out of central London on Saturday for a job and used the a13 both ways as our yard is in East Hanningfield. I noticed 1 sign on the a13 where it crosses the m25 stating overnight road closures from 22.00-05.00 and also think i spotted a sign saying that the works along the new camera stretch are due to run for 52 weeks.

Just to update this - the 'camera not in use' signs have been removed on the M25 exit slip eastbound. Also the top of the Lakeside junction. Quite possibly others too.

The camera not in use signs have been removed, the highways agency have also stated on their website that the speed limit will be 40mph throughout the works although I've only seen 50mph signs.

Yep, all the 'not in use signs' have now been taken away and work has started. I've slowed down but I've noticed a decent minority haven't. I wonder whether they'll be receiving an NIP in the post in a couple of weeks.

I thought I'd update this thread rather than starting a new one. A friend of mine has just received an NIP through the post for doing an average of 47mph. They don't specify which section, only between Wennington and Grays. 7am on a Sunday morning, so the road was pretty empty and I guess his speed crept up.

As he's only just over the threshold I'd be surprised if he doesn't get offered a Speed Awareness Course rather than points.

Be careful out there people - glad I have cruise control!

Think I may have been caught by these bds tonight, despite travelling through regularly.

I was going home, westbound, and saw an END sign on a lamp post, which I thought signalled the return to NSL. As it was dark I wasn't exactly sure of my location. Got up to 70ish for about 10-20 seconds and then saw another 50 sign and thought bks. Dropped my speed back down and then 20 seconds later saw the NSL sign.

Will that 20 seconds of 70ish drag my average too high? Bearing in mind I was doing 40 from the start of the section.

It sounds like you may have sped up after the last camera. I think there is one last 50mph sign between the camera and the NSL sign at the Wennington turn off, so fingers crossed you'll be OK. I think it's completely barmy that a three lane dual carriageway originally designated at 70mph (and which would have been designed to be safe to at least 100mph) is now restricted to 50.

As I said earlier in the thread, my mate got done for 47mph in the 40 section. He went on a Speed Awareness Course for his troubles, so kept the points off his licence.

Good luck!

Update on this, the A13 stretch heading towards Dartford has been increased from 40mph to 50mph overnight.
