Just seen these yellow camera's which have been installed in the last two days from junction 30 through to Ferry Lane and possibly beyond. I thought they were average speed type but the camera's facing the rear of the car as it goes past, if that makes a difference.
No speed limit signs as of this morning.

I was wondering the very same... Probably start as 'traffic monitoring' then migrate magically to average speed...

I noticed the posts on Tuesday and by yesterday morning they had the cameras mounted. This was up by the M25 junction in both directions. I guess the amount of traffic that builds in the mornings back to Ferry lane on occasion, has probably made them think if they can slow the oncoming masses it'll help the flow through the lights at River road. Similar situation for the M25 slip in the evening. It may well achieve that but for the remaining 20hrs of the day and all weekend it'll just piss people off being forced to do 50 on a three lane carriageway for an extra 4+ miles.

I see more people checking phones, lighting cigarettes and messing with sat navs through average speed check areas than anywhere else on the road network (except maybe central London). These areas are supposedly speed controlled for safety but I'd argue they're probably less safe than if traffic was allowed to flow at the normal speed.

Here's a better idea, get rid of those bloody traffic lights. Why are they there? Stopping 3 lanes of traffic so a few cars can turn right. Why can't they go the few extra yards down the A13, come off, go under it and come back to turn left? Madness

I noticed these yesterday. Really hope they don't reduce the limit to 50mph. That would truly be scensoredt. I haven't seen anything in the press about it.

Unusual that they're rear facing, but as the A13 has had more than its fair share of accidents involving bikers perhaps its an effort to slow them down (not sticking the blame entirely on the bikers but if you drive that road every day you'll know that some of them do tank it through the traffic).

It wouldn't surprise me if they end up installing average cameras all the way back to Sadlers Farm. Glad my old shed has cruise control.

Just a shame these cameras can't help prosecute the nupties who insist on sitting in the middle lane at 45-50mph mad

Haven't seen them but have two suggestions:

1. More bloody road works for several weeks or months where nobody appears to be doing anything - cameras used for average speed checks at 50mph

2. Cameras used to monitor impact of new "free flowing tolls" (their words, not mine) at Dartford Crossing due to go live on November 30th. Could monitor traffic volume as well as average speed.

Whatever they are for it won't be good for any road users.

I'm thinking too it could be about the introduction of tolls change or maybe that the traffic in the mornings just before the m25 is horrendous..Which makes everyone try and catch up on which is the fastest stretch of the a13 inside the m25??..

Say no more. This is a joke. Totally agreed about the middle lane drivers too. Every bloody day. I do hope they have the variable speed limits as when I use this road it's after 8pm westbound and 8am eastbound. So I don't encounter traffic, ever. I don't fancy sitting at 50 at all. But I'm guessing it'll be a constant 50 zone at all hours. To be fair though, it's not that much of a stretch of road. Basically to and from the junctions either side of the M25. It'll add a couple of minutes to my journey. But I'm not quite sure what it'll actually achieve

Actually making dedicated lanes to join the M25 from London and exit M25 to go East (to help DP World) will be a nice addition, lets just hope the cameras are taken down once the works are complete....

Looking at that Highways Agency link above, I think they'll be permenant. So 50mph between Wennington and Grays. Why?
When its busy, 50mph is a distant dream, and when its not busy there's no justification in slowing the traffic down.

What needs to be addressed are the idiots who barrel down the A13 when the M25 slip road is busy and almost come to a dead stop on the A13 as they try and force their way in near the front of the queue. These at the most dangerous fools in my view.

Some have gone up as you exit the tunnels into Essex. Also as you leave the qe2 booths into Kent.

Getting ready to make some more money out of the free flow system (if, indeed, it does free flow).

This will slow me down big time if it is 50mph coming and going to work. Whats wrong with 70 mph.

Im not sure what the issue is with 70 mph. it will also slow my journey as well. 5am is usually rather quiet and i dont se the need for 50 mph through there.

Noticed last night the little '50' signs with paint over them. Oh well, just means one will need to go faster in the other sections smile

Interesting that today and yesterday the speed signs by the outside lane show 50MPH and are uncovered but the signs on the inside lane which on some also include the picture of a camera and are still covered up. so are the cameras working or not and can you be done for speeding if you receive a notice through. I took caution and stuck to the 50MPH while others were wizzing by.
