Does anyone know where I can see the HS1 railway going through countryside? Ideally I need to be able to see it from about a mile away, with the train going at full speed (ie. not near a station).

I want to have an idea of how loud the HS2 will be from a mile away once it's costructed.

I'd have a look at the bit where it runs alongside the M20 in the open air and see if there is a viewing point on a hill on either side to the line and/or M20 where you can see and hear any noise from the prescribed distance.

Rainham Marshes - might have to join the RSPB though - not sure how quick it would be going there though.

Not what your after but you can get pretty close to one of the tunnels as the trains go in/come out on Oliver Road in West Thurrock.

Thanks. I think I'll head into the countryside just north-east of the M20 by Maidstone and see if I can see it from there.

I mountain bike by it quite a but. pilgrims way pretty much behind the Shell garage on the downside of Blue Bell Hill is where it enters and exits the tunnel through the downs.

It comes out at the bottom of the woods that are behind Buckmore park, there is a road that runs along side for a short distance then a gravel path that runs along side before turning back to road pretty much to the Medway bridge.

Another good place would be Hythe jct 11 of the M20. It's well fast as it passes there

Awesome thanks, Pilgrims Way near Thurnham and Broad Street looks perfect - will check it out this evening. Do you know how often the trains go past there by any chance?

Not sure it will help you decide how loud HS2 will be.

HS2 will be using a different track design to make it quieter. My son is doing a Masters in Accoustic Engineering. His professor is working on HS2 rails at the moment, in fact last time I was there he had a 1 ft long section of rail on his desk. An lot of work is going into this by the guys that made jet engines quieter and submarines virtually silent.

I think there will be too much intervening tree cover to see it clearly from Thurnham/Broad Street. Try this - https://goo.gl/maps/Zvc1Jomt8Qu

It's Nashenden Farm Lane you want. You can drive quite a way up there but will then have to walk a gravel track. Alternatively goto Stoney Lane off Maidstone Road (kind of opposite where comet used to be) that's the other end of the track

I live 1 mile south of the HS1 between Maidstone and Ashford. We almost never hear the train but can hear the M20 itself. The train is much quieter than a motorway.
