Morning all,

I'll be living in Charleston in just a few weeks now and was wondering if there is much of a car community, gatherings or anything of that nature?

The PH Sunday Services here in the UK have been great and 600 cars at Brooklands museum is a fantastic morning out - I'd love to attend anything similar when i'm stateside, it'll be integral to being able to call it home!

Cheers,

Ben

Ben hi
Welcome to Charleston (soon). I have lived here nearly 10 years (from Devon), beautiful place.
The car scene isn't massive here. First off try the local Cars & Coffee. Its in Mt Pleasant, just outside downtown Charleston, in the Towne Centre shopping area on Hwy 17. Every Saturday from around 8.30 to 11am, in front of Atlanta Bread. Always a good mix of cars. There is a local British Car Club too.
There is a great show in the upstate every year (http://euroautofestival.com) about 4 hours from Charleston. Its in the BMW plant, so a great setting.
The Amelia Island Concours is about 4 or 5 hours away, every March, worth a trip. Hilton Head Concours is about 2 hours south near Savannah. Racetracks are Roebling Road and Kershaw Motorspeedway. Road Atlanta is about 5 hours away. Mountains from Charleston about 5 hours.
Feel free to PM me for more info.
What brings you to Charleston?

That's some great information - thank you. I found the Cars & Coffee facebook page and it looks like a fair few turn up. I look forward to attending, every Saturday is pretty common - I'd typically assume that it would be once a month!

I'll check out the semi local tracks you mentioned too, although I guess some of the greatest road driving can be found up in the mountains.

My wife is from Greensboro, NC and we decided to leave the rush of London and move to Charleston. She's an art and antiques dealer so her business was easy to relocate. I've been working for Honda Motor Europe for the past 5 years managing our customer strategy, I am however in the process of job applications now which is a little daunting!

I meant to say that the track at Kershaw looks like it could be a great resource!

You may already know this but the Charleston job market is very competitive. A LOT of people want to move here, but its not a great area for finding good employment. Pay is lower compared to other areas and housing is a little pricey, depends on your lifestyle and budget etc. I was laid of in Feb 2012 and it took me 13 months to find another engineering management position here. Its all about networking. I don't mean to put you off, but give you a realistic view of expectations etc.
Please feel free to PM me for any other information.

See you at Cars and Coffee perhaps. Look for the tal guy with the Daimler SP250 or black Jaguar XJS...

Beautiful day here, sunny clear blue skies, but just around 10 deg C or so.

Cheers

Great - I look forward to seeing you, and of course the Daimler at Cars and Coffee!

Job wise, I guessed as much and have heard similar stories. I'm hoping that a 1st class degree out of business school, still under 30 and 5 years at a big brand will help. I'm of the opinion that without giving it a go I'll never know, and in the worst case scenario there's always the UK.

Enjoy that clear day, just scanned a few webcams and it looks beautiful!

Did you make it here yet? Thanks for bringing the English weather! Just kidding.
I may make it to Cars and Coffee this Saturday (Feb 15th). Let me know if you are around to say hi and welcome to Charleston.

Hi!

Yes we're here, moved down in early January and now have a place down by Colonial Lake in downtown. I'd love to head over to C&C this Saturday, i'll be sure to check it out. I'm driving a rather crude Mercedes SUV currently so shouldn't be too hard to miss.

Look forward to it,

Ben
