Hi

I am new to Florida and I am struggling to find a track day inspite of the great tracks here, am I missing something like it's not called a track day?

Performance Driving Group do some fun events, as do Trackweekend .com. When searching of things in the US, be somewhat more American and less subtle. So fun places to drive fast, just such a shame the roads or so dreadful. Where are you in the Sunshine State?

Leigh,

You will probably end up joining the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) They organize most events. Not sure which part of Florida you are interested in. Here are a few tracks: Homestead; Moroso (now known as Palm Beach International Raceway; Sebring; Daytona Beach. SCCA also runs a lot of Solo II events for which you do not need a competition license.

Thank you for that. I am in Orlando and that was useful information for me.

As Wilf says - join SCCA - they have half a dozen open meets at Sebring every year.

I'm also in Orlando - depending on what you race, you might want to take a look at Run What Ya Brung (Fri nights) at Orlando Speedworld out at Bithlo.
Not a track day - but pretty intense and competitive.

Thanks Matt. I have a corvette but I would like to run on the track non competitive. I might attend one of those events as a spectator. Going to watch nascar at daytona to the weekend. Can't wait.

Coke Zero 400 sure is a spectacle - been many times, though I'd be just a tad worried about the weather this year, remember, the NASCAR boys don't run in the rain.
Also, the traffic in and out (particularly out) can be a proper drag, depending on where you end up parking. I'd advise you to bite the bullet and pay to park in one of the business parking lots on Int Speedway Blvd. Speedway parking north of the facility is in muddy fields with a bus transfer, which gets overwhelmed when the race is done.
I-4 back to Orlando becomes a rolling road block - might want to go the long way (1-95 south to 528 Beachline) which will still get you home faster.

Leigh,

As I said you may want to check out the Solo II events. You will see those in Central Florida at http://cfrsolo2.com/ Not the same as circuit racing, but still fun - and cheaper. A Corvette may not be the ideal car!

Hi Wilf

I have been looking into those just trying to get me head round them. I think I might have to save up for another car here to use.

I went to the firecracker 250 last night as for my first nascar experience. Not the big event but not so much traffic. Some very close racing and amazing that almost every car had some high speed shunt at some point. Think I will be a regular fan.

Leigh,

NASCAR is the best promoted motorsport in this country. But I am not 100% of a fan. Using carburetors; pretending the car out there looks like your Fusion, Camry, etc.; races seem to be won as much by pit strategy as by driving skill. And worst of all, nearly every race is just roundy-roundy; I like to see a road course. Of course in Florida the tracks are nearly flat, like the converted airports in the UK. Poor for spectators.

I suggested Solo II because it is just you and your skills against the stopwatch. Surprisingly the powerful sports cars do worse than many a family car. Go and watch an event and see if it is something you would like to do. I believe this is one of the few types of event where they do not charge an entry fee. SCCA has many other types of motorsport and they are worth watching too.

I hope you will find something you enjoy.

Wilf.

They moved to fule injection a few years ago actually. McLaren supplies the electronics to the entire grid.

You're right Jonathan. My bad.

No car sold new in the US since 1990 had a carb; from 2012 season NASCAR changed over.

I think it's more telling that they only moved to unleaded petrol a few years ago too. The crazy thing is that NASCAR teams actually use a ton of cutting edge technology, and they'll run full telemetry in testing. It's just that for races they return to the stone age.

Hi Leigh

New to Orlando myself have been on the look out for car meets / clubs / track days / shows as well and not having too much luck at the moment. Post up if you find anything that might be of interest in this area. There must be things going on just got to find them !

Cheers

LOTS going on - pretty much all the time....

I've lived in Orlando for around 15 years, so know my way around - let me know if you need a UK perspective.
