The type of visa that is being petitioned is kind of important to know, because some are a LOT more restrictive than others. 'Legal Alien Allowed To Work' is a condition within an application for a SSN, rather than a visa status. If you are moving over here next month, you would do yourself a favor find out exactly which visa is being petitioned on your behalf.
OK, I will do some more digging next week - I am hoping to find out if they will accept my terms this coming week. wink

You can mitigate some of this by keeping the vehicle in a less crime-ridden zip code, by garaging it and by restricting the annual mileage.
In short, steel yourself for some sticker-shock for at least the initial 12 months.
OK - I wonder if there is a web page that gives you crime rate 'map' by zip code? I will take a look now....

Thanks for the advice!

So - transpires Hagerty will charge me $400 per annum as a second car (not daily driver) and I will have to buy another car. Insurance for a standard Ford Tarus is around $800 per annum.

At least that gives me an idea.....

Mmmmmmmmm

Nosh.

I used cutler freight forwarding on a roll on roll off, but to the east coast, full of bmw's built down there. I had it fully insured for the boat trip out but Nigel at cutler freight said at the time they never had any issues, so the return was just basic cover which saves lots. A discussion with the local insurance broker and he insured it as an Esprit as the federal Elise did not exist then. I did live out there for one year before bringing it over. Probably better to have a head start for a month or two before the car arrives. I did get the one year extension from Charleston (sc) customs but an imported ar in North Carolina is a rare thing. I imagine in California it could be difficult/impossible.

I know Matt Harper is an expert here, so listen very much to his advice.

From my own personal experience (Moved to So Cal in 2014 on L1 Visa, now almost through Green Card). The car import will be the least of your worries!

Do you know more about your long term position? I.E would you be looking to move back, or stay out here longer term? If you know for sure its a short term thing... i'd be seriously tempted to leave it behind and pick it up when you get home.

That also gives you the opportunity to explore some of the finer cars we have over here!

Regarding the drivers license, you will need to take the US test. Technically within 10 days of arriving... it took me almost 12 months to get around to doing mine!

Good luck with your opportunity.
