HI all.

We're off to the US next year for a family wedding in Houston, but will extend the stay to make it into a vacation. As such, we're considering making it a road trip for the 4 of us (wife and I and our two sons 12 and 6).

In the time period we have (say, 10 days), we could conceivably travel from - say - SF and follow R66 to Adrian in Tx, then down to Houston. To do this, we could rent an RV which takes care of the accommodation (and a bit more tolerable for the boys) etc. or do it with a hire car (perhaps quicker/cheaper) and just book into hotels/motels along the way.

Both options seem to have their merits and risks, so was wondering whether anyone else had done something similar and could share experience and offer advice?

Thanks

I am based in Houston. Just completed a tour round Texas inc a wee bit of Route 66.
1. A lot of 66 is gone now and replaced with interstate, so check your route carefully
2. Most RV hires have only 100 miles free per day, so costs quickly mount up, we found it way cheaper to drive andstay in hotels, just doing it night by night. And that was driving V8 Landrover smile

Hope this helps a bit.
