I've now been here a week - got most things sorted out. Nice little apartment in Beacon Hill all of 15 mins walk to work. Bank account sorted, SSN on its way, temporary replacement phone for the one I left in the seat back of Virgin flight VS011 - doh! So thank you very much to everyone for their advice, particularly Matt, Gavin and Jim. No doubt there'll be questions to come, but the hard part's over with - thanks guys

Call up every couple of days after the first week to get your SSN. They get the card a few days after the SSN itself is issued, so if they are feeling nice, they'll give you the SSN (write it down on a piece of paper for you to collect), saves you a few days.

You end up hitting refresh quite often, and getting disapointed when there haven't been any posts in the last 20 minutes.

Really pleased it worked out for you the way it did. It'll be interesting to see if you treat this as a temporary adventure - or you change your mind and end-up staying for good. Enjoy Beantown, it's a great city.

Ditto; I found out last week that a couple of friends of mine who had moved to France were now to be found in Chicago and starting down the route to residency. Odd how it goes; they were never fans of America, but after 6 months or so, love it!

I shudder to think what preservatives and chemicals are going into my body.
Nothing goes off. Ever.

The milk lasts for so long! So any advice for Boston? Is it worth taking the trip down from MTL to take a look? I keep meaning to at some point but the weather is evil

I honestly couldn't say yet compared to Montreal. I've been a bit remiss about exploring much. It's been apartment -> office -> apartment -> office etc. Although I have found a good bar about 5 blocks away

Yeah, I feel bad because I've not really gone and 'explored' yet, it's really weird, being in a totally different country and doing boring things like hoovering and buying milk

Nothing goes off. Ever. We buy our food from Whole Foods, who do a fantastic job of supplying preservative and chemical free food. It tastes so much better and is much better for you too. As with everything, you really do get what you pay for.

We have a hill 30 minutes away door to door, they make snow at night and have managed to keep the place open all winter.

I had a block of 'cheese' that had been sitting in the fridge for 5 years; finally binned it when I moved. Looked exactly the same as the day I bought it, i.e. inedible.

On the other hand, Wisconsin does have Road America in it, which makes up for all sorts of sins.

Matt, Gavin or anyone else with corporate visa experience - have any of you had the situation where a company is acquired by another and the staff subsumed into it?
Presumably, given that my employer is on my actual visa, the acquiring company has to "take over" the sponsorship (for want of a better word). Is that as painful a process as the initial application?
