Not sure I like the sound of this bit:

When the tunnel opens, there will be three staff on duty 24 hours a day; two in the control centre on the north side watching the comprehensive video and radar monitoring systems, one in a vehicle continually circulating the site. Average speed cameras will monitor vehicles and the Highways Agency’s automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras will monitor network speeds on the A3 as a whole.

Just use a pace car. As long as they stick to the speed limit and you are following them past both cameras you can do what you like through the tunnel wink
This, so we need someone with cruise and an accurate speedo! hehe

I'd pay good money to be a passenger in the car with no plates at full chat through there........... scratchchin

Or all pitch in £50 each and chuck it at head of security and ask politely to 'use' the tunnel for half hour.

As I did the walk through, I don't recall seeing any actual limit signs but something makes me think it is 50.

Though the signs within the tunnels itself are illuminated (not that they were on on Saturday!), so they I guess they can vary it allowing for the traffic flow.

It's going to be a variable limit, this in the main is for when they put a contraflow in. I can't remember what the normal limit was going to be and I think they said forty for the contraflow, as Furry says we will ask all the questions and post back the ones which maybe of interest. hehe

Going by some of the road projects we have worked on, the circulating vehicle will be for checking for break-downs, accidents, debis, escorts for special loads etc. Its not unusual from what I understand, dartford has a similar thing with more vehicles.

If it's a 50 limit, there should at least be some good noise making opportunities !

Right then;

The normal operating limit for the tunnel will be 70mph. If there are any problems or a contraflow is put in place then the limit will drop to 40 mph. There is the standard lane control using red X's and green arrows plus matrix boards.

At the entrance to the tunnels are barriers and lights similar to level crossing barriers to stop traffic from entering the tunnel if needed.

A moving central barrier can be moved accross the carriageway should it be needed to have a contraflow through one tunnel or to turn around the traffic, it takes and hour to move though!!!

Now onto the important bit....

The SPECS camera's are position each end of the tunnels in the central reservation, which means no hiding behind trucks as you pass them (unless your on the inside of course!!)
The cameras have now been home office approved to enforce both the 70 mph limit and the 40 mph limit.

The RADAR in the tunnel is to tell them when the traffic stops, something falls off a vehicle, a vehicle crashes etc (nothing to do with speed enforcement).

There are CCTV cameras everywhere.

The tunnel is staffed 24/7/365

For god sake please don't crash!!!!

Just that if it goes wrong, I have a horrible feeling it will go wrong very badly!!!
The tunnel is full of mod cons etc, but nothing to stop you crashing into the wall and overturning!!!
