Well, I've now been to Stovell's twice and must say it is the best restaurant I've been to in the UK.

Attentive, great food, all the 'extras' you expect from a top eatery and for £38 for 23 courses.

So, as I like a meal out, where is better?

Been to London House, good but not as good. Drakes is £68 for their cheapest menu, might go there next.

All ideas welcome, ideally not the other end of the country.

Bread, crisps, pallet cleanser

Prawn starter

Quail starter

Rabbit main

Apricot dessert

Not finished off with a Louis XII brandy

Is that right?

When it was the Cloche Hat it was around £138 for 2-3 courses smile

But still worth every damn penny though yes

if it really is that price, then you can guess where I will be on Saturday night!

Just looked on their website. £30 for 2 courses and £38 for 3 smile

At that price I would expect it served on a nice clean plate and not a bit of wood or old roof tile

If it is 23 courses I'm guessing the courses are quiet small.

It is 3 courses, not 23 wink

Loved the food - got unlucky when we went there - loud, brash, obnoxious clientel frown

That's one of the places in the area we haven't been - simply because no one has recommended it.

I think we might head over soon smile

Stovells is superb and so is Drakes, though slightly different style of food.

I never tried the cloche hat, the reviews seemed mixed?

The wife and I thought stovells was one of the best, if not the best meals we've had.

I'm not sure I agree it's the nicest place I've eaten, however the food is good.

Totally separately from this thread we ended up going to Stovell's for lunch yesterday with a group of friends, good food, nice atmosphere fair price for the quality on offer. 3 Courses are £25 for Sunday Lunch. I'd like to go back and try the A la Carte menu sometime. Wine list looked good too, unfortunately I was driving.

Well, we went to London House this week, was nice but still Stovell's for me wins it.

Where can we try that will be better?

Apologies for not catching the photos before starting to eat!

Bluebells is great but pricey, Thatched Tavern has never disappointed but I would suggest MyAlaCarte in Caversham.

Very few people have heard of it but it is fantastic, most of the food is sourced locally, it is quite intimate but not pretentious - it is probably my fave place to eat in the SAS area......

Is it expensive in comparison to Bluebells?

So is The Brickmakers in Windlesham but neither are in the same league as Stovell's, Bluebells or the London House IMHO..

Nope, much cheaper. Really excellent food, waiters are great and very down to earth - can't really think of an element of the place I would fault to be honest!
