My partner and I recently got a work bonus and would like to treat ourselves to dinner with a budget of up to £100 including a drink or two.

In the past, we have gone to Millar and Carter to do this and had a nice steak, however they are fully booked for when we want to go. I am therefore looking for alternative nice restaurants in the Berkshire area. We both like steak but also like gastro style pubs (like the George & Dragon at Swallowfield).

Anyone got any recommendations?

Per person or all in?

We went to the Horse & Groom Hare Hatch along the A4 for the first time in a few years a couple of weeks back for my birthday. Its now no longer 'Bluebeckers' or a Beefeater but a Bunning & Price & much better for it. Two starters, mains, sweets & drinks came in at just under £60 (only 1 drink as was driving).

Menu here.

Bel and the Dragon in Reading (or one of the others) could be a good shout based on the other places you mention. Check you're happy with the prices first though as it could be over £100 for both of you depending on what / how much you drink.

Some of the other suggestions are good but I'd be worried that it'd end up costing more than £100 at a few of them.

Where abouts do you live? If you are both going to have a couple of drinks you might need to be within reasonable taxi drive
Also, is that £100 per head?

Good gastro pubs:
Chequers at Eversley Cross: http://www.thechequerseversleycross.co.uk (Technically just over the border in Hants, but worth the trip).

Greyhound Finchampstead : http://www.thegreyhound-finchampstead.co.uk

for a difference try Bray marina http://www.riversidebrasserie.co.uk

Good luck. Let us know where you end up

My vote goes to the Walters arms in Sindlesham (Wokingham/Winnersh)

£100 would get you a good meal and drinks and the food/decor/staff are fab.

That’s where I always go for a reasonable celebration/treat anyway.

I live in Winnersh so know the Walters Arms and the Reading town centre places well, but all of the others are new to me so well worth starting this thread as I have plenty of new places to try!

If you can stretch to West Berks area - The Pot Kiln, Frilsham is a lovely meal out.

Hinds Head in Bray is nice. Gastro pub. Excellent service and pretty good food.

Thatched Tavern in Ascot (Cheapside) is good, too.

If it's £100 between you, then try L'Ortolan's lunch menu. Excellent value.

Ended up at The Horse & Groom as suggested above. Definitely recommended, lovely food, great service, nice atmosphere and very reasonable pricing. Going to try the Crooked Billet next, then got loads of new places to try so thanks all.

Went there for lunch with the wife and baby and was really impressed, great food, really helpful friendly staff and wasn't expensive 2x starter main and dessert plus drinks at £80

Why the angry face if you were so impressed?

Me and OH went to The george and dragon in Wargrave last Friday, starters, mains (steak), wine and beer, coffee and a pudding to share = £75

Great staff, good decor, views of the river and good food, was impressed!
