Can anyone help with regards to traffic levels and the M3?

We are thinking about moving to the Fleet area and so my new commute would be to join the M3 at junction 4a and then leave at junction 1 i.e I go under the M25. I tend to arrive at work at 8am so would look to leave home at before 7.00, say 6.50 and join at junction 4a just after 7.00. Would I be joining a car park but this time?

I get on the M3 at Bracknell and head into Teddington every morning, the M3 is very busy leading up to the M25 but after that it is pretty much what I would call a perfect motorway. This is with me joining it at about 0830, not sure what it's like earlier but it's the M25 that causes most of the delays.

I did this commute last year, thankfully back on the train now.

It's worst on a Monday and gets gradually better as the week goes on. I joined at 4a between 7 and 7.30am and most days would queue up on the slip road, you'd want to be getting on before 7 to avoid this queue but even then will be very busy by junction 4. Generally speaking though once on it does keep moving unless there is an incident, average time from 4a to 1 would be about 30min I would say at that time.

Thank you for your reply. Sounds like the A3! Very busy around the M25 which is a car park at 7.40 when I go over.

What time do you head back to Bracknell and is the M3 busy then?

I do this journey every day too and turn off at Sunbury arriving between 08.00 and 08.40 depending on when I get up and leave. It's busy in the main from Farnborough from 7.15. Sometimes you will be stopped and othertimes you will have a few miles and minutes of free moving traffic.

No problem, I finish at PH towers at 1730 and am generally back home by 1830. Again, it gets busy by the M25 but that is due to 2 lanes into 1 and the 50mph average speed cameras rather than the M25 itself. After that I'd say the average speed varies between 50 & 70 up to Bracknell but I do see it queuing further down sometimes.

Commute on the M3
Your having a laugh...smilesmile

It will be worse soon when the HA start spending 146m on it.

Basic driving course on motorway driving is all that's needed
And abolish this company car culture so drivers have more respect for what their driving
and the insurance costs

Used to commute to Chertsey from J4a and rush hour starts around 7am. As soon as you get an accident, your commute time can double or more

I would say its more like 6.50 now, on a Monday J4a is jammed from 6.45. When the schools are off it's a different story, traffic flows nicely even after 7.00

I bike in to London several days a week and leave Amazingstoke at around 05:30.
This puts me at the M3/M25 junction at approximately 06:00, and it's already rammed by then to the point where I'm filtering through standing or very slow traffic most days.
Doesn't seem to be any pattern to it beyond the usual school holiday dwell, but the issues are traffic joining at 4/4A then backing up off the M25.
Once past the M25 the run to J1 is usually empty. (Just watch out for the occasional Plod traffic car based at Hampton Court coming back in)

I live in Fleet, a sporadically (Used to be every day for 9 months) commute Fleet to nr Heathrow via M3 M25.

M3 is pretty bad, especially on a Monday, however if you get on the motorway by 7,you should be moving 'most'of the time. It isn't pleasant, though forget leaving later unless it's after 9.

That's said, as a trade off for living here,I'd do it every day if I had to. My current commute to Guildford via hogs back is almost as bad.
