I rather thought I knew what a library did, but in a dull moment on a train, I had a look at the latest email Surrey Libraries sent me....

It turns out they have a Magazine Subscription service through which you can download a whole bunch of magazines (Evo, Mountain Bike Rider, Digital Camera World, The Economist and, er, Cross Stitch Collection, to name but a few) which are actually worth having (and also Cross Stitch Collection!) to phones, laptops & tablets for free!

I was rather chuffed with this discovery, as it's going to save me a fair few quid every year, so I thought I'd pass it on in here.

The only downside I've discovered is that I've not been able to figure out a way of subscribing for free through the library login directly on my ipad, so be careful not to end up paying for something you can get free through the library! Going in through a web browser to select titles and then have them appear in your browser app isn't exactly a show stopper though. smile

Thanks! I take it the magazines make all their money through ads rather than the cover fee, then!

ETA: Arse. I haven't registered with them. Will have to get on to it!

Ah, yes, you do actually have to register in person with a library before you can register for this! hehe

Bloody brilliant! whilst I often go to the library in Woking or Camberley, never realised they did this.

I love reading magazines and loads of choice and a lot of them are ones I would buy.

Thanks so much for the tip biggrin

It would seem other libraries do it too....

Thanks OP!thumbup
At first I thought I was out of luck - I am in Sandhurst, near Camberley but not in Surrey.
It's Berkshire, but not West Berks.
But I Googled for Bracknell Forest and they offer a similar service (but no EVO)frown
Still given how they screw motorists with their road planning around here I was amazed to find any motoring titles!

Thanks for this Kermit Power, never imagined this as a library service. Just downloading a load of EVO's onto my tablet. Might even read my first Fast Car in many years, it's free after all!

Best tip I've seen on here for quite a while. Thanks OP. Works for South Bucks.

I just did a Google search for my local library with "online magazine", it brought it up quickly.

Or get a card from your local library and try registering.

Ah, silly me. biggrin

Just found the RBK one. Not as comprehensive for magazines but they have a few online newspapers and a number of books and audio books. Will have to register with my local Surrey CC library.
