Boring post alert (sorry)...

On Thursday evening at about 5ish I need to drive from just north of Winchester to just south of Guildford. Which is likely to be the less traffic-ridden journey - the M3 or the A31? I'm assuming as it's a BH weekend the traffic will be fairly heavy either way... scratchchin

Personally I'd do the A272 to Petersfield then join the A3, as it's a much more interesting route.

Well that got more interesting. What's Hindhead like now at rush hour? I've not been through since the new tunnel opened.

On a normal Sunday evening the A31 is pretty much empty even when the M3 is busy and crawling along, so likely to be similar on a BH weekend.

Sorry, I don't really know, not travelled it at rush hour, but I'd have though Hindhead can't be any worse than Guildford will be.

Definitely A31, especially at the moment with the M3 roadworks. It'll likely be fast all the way up to Farnham & once you're past there you should have a good run onto the Hogs Back.

To round this off (don't you hate it when people leave threads hanging? wink ) this is the route I took in the end. Bit of a procession most of the way, but anywhere would be in rush hour. The views were nice and I managed to get a couple of quiet stretches along the way smiledriving

Hindhead and the A3 were fine as well. That tunnel's pretty impressive!
