My VRS has destroyed itself. It's at Skoda right now who are quoting me 6500 (probably plus vat, too much shock forgot to ask) for a new engine. I'm looking at various options including an indie rebuild and beating Skoda up as it shouldn't have failed.

Any recommendations on local vw/audi/skoda guys who could do the job. It was a cam tensioning chain failure so the internals are trash probably.

Hi Alex.
This place always comes highly recommended on here (I have used it for general servicing for the Mrs' Skoda and it's been great).
Maybe worth having a chat with them.
Cheers

+1 for Mill Road garage too. I bought a polo bluemotion as a winter snotter and took it there for a service based on the positive feedback from here.

Good pricing but more importantly very honest guys..They really want repeat business and I will continue to use them.. was there last week for an electrical problem

if your car has a full skoda main dealer service history then I would suspect you will get a significant portion of goodwill. but you need to chase it with the dealer, and insist ( politely) that you get some goodwill. It might then cost a couple of grand. Still a lot, but that would be cheaper than an independent.

Thanks for all the tips.

I don't have a full dealer history, it's been serviced by an indie.

However, I am lead to believe that this is a known issue and there is a technical bulletin about it. In summary, the cam chain tensioner has a fault that means some engines will randomly fail on startup. My car falls into the group that this effects, the age range, engine spec and every other detail.
There has been no recall on it as it's rare enough not to be cost effective to replace the part on all cars. It affects all Skoda, Seat and VW's with these engines.

People have been offered anything from goodwill to total replacements foc.

I've found recon engines for £1500+ vat. Plus fitting and removal.
I'll be having an argument on Monday. I'll keep you informed.
