Does that tie in with your thoughts for a good viewing spot?

Not really... I doubt the google maps flightpath is 100% accurate, but it does indicate she'll approach from the South-East, and depart to the West.

If she doesn't circle the airfield, we might not see a lot from the east end. I think we'd be better off on the west end of the airfield, somewhere out along the Fleet road (A323).

A quick look on street view shows it not being very friendly for parking up around there frown

The google map suggests along the M3 from Popham and then SE to Dunsfold from Farnborough
Any offers of a good spot most welcome. Might take the Royce out for a turn

Opposite way round... she's coming from Dunsfold to Farnborough, and then South West along the M3 to Popham...

Nope... the FAST Museum I think is still the best bet... despite being at the East side of the airport, it offers a great view out over the airfield.

It's open tomorrow (Saturday), so will pop down and enquire to see if they have any viewing arrangements planned.

I'd love to take my grandad to see this, so when you have more details of somewhere decent to park up and a more accurate time please let me know and I'll be forever grateful smile

Have you seen this aeroplane before? If yes, then you'll probably get over not seeing it this weekend. I didn't think I'd be here (Farnborough) to see it on Sunday, so drove up to Old Warden last weekend to see her display.

The thing is, I can't see why folk are getting all in a lather about seeing the 'last flight' even. And these farewell tour flights are not even being touted as her last flight. If you're nearby, and fortunate enough to be in a position to see this flypast at the weekend, then go enjoy. But unless you've been on another planet for the last few years, you'll already have made the effort to go see her at a full display somewhere, and will have fond memories of the old beast to make up for missing out on one last fleeting glimpse as she nips about, hither and thither, saying farewell to the skies.

Oh, and am I the only one hoping they maintain her in an "as airworthy" condition when she's retired. If only to allow her the possibility of a ferry flight to somewhere else if Robin Hood Airport goes tits up and gets covered in housing?
XM655 http://www.xm655.com/wm.php is the latest preserved Vulcan at risk, but maintenance and preservation difficulties associated with such a large airframe have already seen survivors rot away and get cut up for scrap. Less likely for '558, maybe, given her iconic status, but not impossible...

I'm hearing talk that they are planning two passes, no idea on timings though.

Been down to FAST, and they have suggested getting there early, they're expecting a huge crowd, and will be shutting the gates at some point - they've suggested getting in by midday.

So the choice be everyone's... Head there early and spend some time wandering round the museum, or find another spot?

I am assuming we are expecting her to do a pass (or passes) along the length of the runway?

A plea to anyone who does go to FaST museum to view the flypast...

FaST is free to enter, and is run by volunteers. But curating, conserving, and displaying the collection has costs. So please, please, please, if you go in, make a donation. A little or a lot, it all helps.

And while you are there, go take a look at where it all started - with Samuel Franklin Cody. There's a fine replica of his 1908 "British Army Aeroplane No1". Then, when XH558 makes her appearance, glance skyward in wonderment at the advances in aircraft technology made in just 44 short years. 1908 - bamboo and canvas, bouncing along a field barely "flying" at all in modern terms, and completely unarmed. 1952 - stressed skin, pressurized cockpits, and the awesome power of four Olympus engines, capable of delivering nuclear weapons to Moscow. And much of the pioneering work that delivered these advances was done right here in Farnborough.

It's a fabulous little museum, based in a building that goes back to before WW1, when it was part of the Royal Engineers balloon school.

And another promo for the FAST Museum from me. I may be able to pop down this afternoon so if any PHers are around, I'll be there if you want a tour around the museum. I'm a member but not an official guide.
