I cannot think of any other way of describing it. Because pedestrians cannot be arsed to cross the road, they have put in temp lights for 6 weeks.

Received late today from Highways Dept, BFBC - notification of traffic management on Crowthorne High Street - starting immediately, until approx 6th May.

"There is currently some hoarding externally on Manhattan House which has closed the footway.

We have reviewed the current traffic management which is adequate however pedestrians are ignoring signage and walking into the carriageway into the oncoming traffic rather than walking back to the crossing point.

It is highly likely that we will have to request that temporary signals are placed on the carriageway to allow a pedestrian walkway in the carriageway. These will be in place 24 hours a day and manned during peak hours. This may impact on congestion in the High Street. We feel that this will ensure that pedestrians are safe. The hoarding is in place until 6th May"

The dim and inconsiderate are spoiling it once again.

I was driving along the high street around lunchtime and saw a load of Edgbarrow kids walking in the road and laughing their heads off at missing the busy traffic.

It's, sadly, becoming laughable. The idiots let their dogs sh*t on the pavements, walk in the road when there's no need, park across driveways....

I work in one of the office suites Manhattan house. Due to a cock up (namely someone not involving a structural engineer at the right stage, and now having to involve one) the work on replacing the ground floor front windows with shop fronts is apparently delayed. So they've temporarily taken the hoarding down until they're in a position to do the work on the front of the building. It'll go back up at some point and we'll get the traffic lights then I imagine.

As for the bellendry by pedestrians - while idly staring out the window at the high street musing on some work I saw a mother with her young child and her own mother (kid's gran) wait on the opposite side of the road next to the temporary barrier for the zebra crossing (the one closing the zebra crossing) until a car stopped for her. All three then crossed the zebra crossing and walked in the road along side the hoarding while cars passed close by.

Apparently the hoarding is going back up Monday morning - no idea if the temporary traffic lights will be put in at the same time though.

Looks like they're putting the hoarding back but positioning it nearer the building so there'll still be some pavement left - perhaps the intention is to keep the pavement open after all.

I think they needed to have it further out originally to protect against debris falling while the windows were being replaced on the upper floors.

I think you will find the reason is Streetworks Regulations formally NRASWA
If your diverting pedestrians into the carriageway they must have 1.2m space plus the barriers.
Under some circumstances the footpath can be closed and the opposite footpath is used.

Its fking minefield, no matter what signs you put out or what control measures you put in place
for safety some smart ass will always complain. Until they have a collision then they look for the off load and someone else to blame - common sense has long departed.
