Evening all,

My 10yr old middle offspring has recently started learning the electric guitar, and has become totally hooked on it. Getting him to practice was a nightmare until he actually managed to play his first piece (the intro to Smoke on the water) but since then, we can hardly get him off the guitar! smile

To encourage him further, I thought I'd see if I could find somewhere relatively inexpensive to take him along to enjoy some live music, but I'm not sure where to take him, so I thought I'd see if anyone on here had any ideas?

Given that we've got a finite entertainment budget, I'd rather take him to see a cover bands one weekend per month rather than one real band once a year, and fortunately, at least as far as I'm concerned, he has developed an exceptional taste in music, so the more the better as far as I'm concerned! hehe

The sort of things on his playlists include Led Zep, Clapton, the Stereophonics, White Stripes, My Chemical Romance, Green Day, the Killers, Fallout Boy, Cream, Blink 182 etc, etc...

Any suggestions on where to take him? Regular venues, weekend festivals, whatever. Ideally somewhere I can get a decent pint whilst we're there, but the main priority is that they're welcoming to 10yr olds! smile

There must be some local pubs with local acts doing covers or whatever you can try?

I posted this in Thames Valley & Surrey for a reason, you know! wink

I'm actually in Epsom, but happy to go with Surrey, Hants, Berks, Sussex, Kent, London.... Ideally the bits of those closer to Surrey though. Dover, Enfield or Newbury would be pushing it a bit!

Windlesham social club has regular events that would meet your criteria. The beer is good and the regulars are very welcoming. Children are welcome. It might be a bit far for you to travel, but there might be something similar closer to home.

On June 17th they have a Buddy Holly tribute act which is free for members. I think that family membership is £25.00 a year.

The Boiler Room in Guildford is a pretty good venue, very good natured, great fun, great bands and can be cheap:

This is on again and by all accounts is a good little festival aimed at a younger crowd

A mate suggested that, but looking on the website, unfortunately it looks like all the gigs are 16+. frown

The wife has done Butserfest a few times with her friend, she really enjoys it and I believe it is alcohol free.

I'm sure if you look at the t's & c's it depends on the band and the night, I think they are rated.

Frimley Lodge Live is outdoors, a lot of fun and kid friendly. Tickets, food & drink are all very reasonable too and parking is a-plenty. Went last year nad have got tickets for this year's event.

Music at the Crossroads, Hook Norton 24-25th June: http://www.hookymusic.co.uk/

Cherwell District Council

Community Games

Following the huge success in 2015 we are thrilled that CDC will again host a range of children’s activities at Music at the Crossroads in 2016!

Parents looking for ways to occupy their children over the summer holidays can sign up to an array of activities being offered by Cherwell District Council.

Summer 2016 will again see the return of the council’s ever-popular Holiday Hubs which will take place weekdays in Banbury, Bicester and Bloxham. Children aged between five and 15 can enjoy daily programmes full of arts and crafts, fun and games, sport sessions, plus a rotating guest activity.

Cherwell district Council’s Summer hub staff will be present at the Hook Norton festival to give children and parents a taster of what’s in store. Families will be encouraged to take part in a number of sporting activities from tug of war, dodgeball, assault courses and much more!

First day of Marvellous Festival might be worth it.

http://www.marvellousfestivals.com/lineup/

Tribute bands, yes, but I'd expect them to be playing live and half decent tributes to Queen, T-Rex and ACDC would probably catch his attention! From memory they had 4 or 5 beers from a local brewery available last year as well.

Not cheap though, and not been at Dinton Pastures before, so fingers crossed they've considered all the logistics...

Your local theatre will probably have cover bands on regularly. Chequer mead in east grinstead has good shows.
