We are replacing our tired old 1980's galley kitchen with aomething more modern.

It is very much a case of staying with the existing layout, but making better use of more modern unit design to maximise unused space. Current freestanding cooker, fridge/freezer, washing machine and diswasher to be replaced with integrated items.
All services (gas, electric, plumbing, wastewater) are in situ just requiring connection to appliances in near enough same position as existing. Bit of electrical work (move a lightswitch, add plinth lighting) required but otherwise nothing major.

Any recommendations of fitters good at this kind of work in the Reading area gratefully received.

We had got our kitchen from this place in 2014:

Very happy with it and the service we received on the design side. Good value vs the more mainstream places (Wren etc). I would never describe buying a decent kitchen cheap however! (how much for a load of cupboards?!)

Not sure if this is what you are after - do you want a kitchen designed/supplied and fitted, or just fitted?

Thanks, this place is literally just down the road from us, I often walk past on the way to my brother-in-law's, didn't know they were tucked away there, I will give them a call.

At the moment I am just looking hold of getting hold of an independent fitter. We have a design appointment with Wren on Sunday, but their website is giving an estimated fit cost (based on 12 units) of £2,300. I think that's rather steep, for what should be a week's work max.

Wren seem to be a bit cagey on pricing, nothing seems to be publicly visible. I'd rather pull my own teeth out than get into one of these "ooh, well, my sales manager can do you a special discount, if you sign today" type bks that is the stock-in-trade of the double-glazing industry. Is that how Wren operate? If so I'm inclined to cancel, I just hate playing that game.

Time Kitchens is basically a one lady band (or at least it was 2.5 yrs ago). Claire who runs it trades on word of mouth mainly I think. We heard about her via a local gossip group on FB. She was really easy to deal with and came to our house umpteen times to agree the design. Absolutely no sales bks which I can't stand either.

We bought quite a large kitchen and she would have fitted for £1500 IIRC. We opted to get our builder to do it which was a false economy as he cocked a few bits up as well as being a general PITA, and we ended up paying Claire's fitter to come and tidy it up. He was very good.

The product itself is inherently better than Wrens (cupboards /units are stronger), and we were put off them from various horror stories online (mostly poor / incomplete install). Cheaper as well. Comes from a factory in Bolton I believe.
