Heads up - new average speed cameras have appeared in the last week on the A3 northbound at hinchley wood.
Just before and after the existing camera in the 50 zone, and on the right hand bend where the camera van sits after the camera. Don't know if they're live yet.

I doubt they are live yet as on Thursday there was only half poles up. They've got to be calibrated and tested yet so it will be a while.

I noticed them after I'd sailed past the first one and wondered how long it'd been there for. Put two and two together when I noticed the old Gatso was missing and another camera had been erected a little further down.

I would hope there'd be some form of signage up as to when the cameras go live as most people seemed to use the Gatso as the "start" of the 50mph limit, even though it actually started a little way back. It'll probably be quite a nice earner for at least the first few weeks.

Edit: skim read Landshark's links above, looks like there'll be signage. I can still see hundreds of people being caught out though.

There is now a yellow sign confirming these are in use (as of Sunday lunchtime March 19)

My best recollection is there are three sets - the first two with two cameras and the last with just one stretching as noted from just before the 50 limit sign to just before the incoming left feeder

I would hazard a guess they won't be issuing paperwork yet (don't take my word for it though!!) as that would be the quickest installation and testing out!!!

It would be just after the 50 mph (they really need to replace the offside 50mph terminal sign).

They have been put up by Highways England so they cannot go any further into town as just after the slip road comes in the road becomes responsibility of TFL.

Drove through this yesterday

The first camera is way before the old one, just as you get into the 50 zone
What I then noticed yesterday was that people stuck to the 50 limit and then floored it after the second camera (about 500m further on)

but then they had to slam on the brakes as there is a third camera just beyond it

You can be almost guaranteed that this setup will result in crashes as cars suddenly need to brake from 70 to 40 unexpectedly

And then you'll have the surrey scamera van occasionally parked up on the corner so as to take two bites at the cherry.

Still it will all be a lovely little earner for some.

Why on earth should one have to drive at 50 when at certain times of day the traffic is so light you can have three lanes to yourself?

And in rush hour the density of traffic regulate itself.

I doubt it will be there now as it's an average speed. Just appear more often further down near Wisley or on the A31!!!

Obviously I would never dream of going over the speed limit - but its a 3 lane road often with no one on it - why is the limit 50?
In 15 years of driving on the road everyday I have only ever seen 2 accidents in that area and both of them were caused by people braking for the old speed camera

I think it is a lowest common denominator issue - when I was 20 riding an RD250 there were 3 lanes at the Ace of Spades underpass and it had an NSL limit from there past New Malden!

Now we have cars with wide tyres, traction control, ABS, airbags and all sorts of other "safety" b*llocks we need some protection from ourselves apparently - so a 50 limit and only 2 lanes with stripey bits is deemed to be our salvation!

The first new camera is where the limit drops to 50 which is still a way before it changes from 3 to 2 lanes

Well for me being born in Epsom and living in that area for over 25 years it was always a 3 lane road - so when did the 3rd one disappear might be a more relevant question?!

It goes from 3 lanes to 2 lanes by the old speed camera at Claygate.
