So what could he get? What suits him?

I have no idea of his budgets or needs but he will clarify those shortly on the thread no doubt. He is selling the Range, and keeps the Chim and has his BMW V8... (Are you surpised at my memorty Dave - never trust a copper wink )

So to keep with the practicality of the Range (space and comfort) we need to be suggesting estates or 4 X 4's.

I would recommend a RS2 budget permitting but I doubt you would go for such a car. Maybe Subaru Forester?

Oh gee thanks Dizeee! Yes, you have an excellent memory mate, and the ability to read my profile - you'll go far in that job of yours biggrin

My plan is to find a dealer that will take the Rangie in, and give me a car and some cash. At dealer prices, Rangie should raise £25k, perhaps £10k cash in my bin, so that leaves £15k for the car. (Of course these numbers may well be fantasy, who knows?)

I want manual, possible 4WD, fast and fun, comfortable, not too flash as it is to be used for work. I don't want an estate, and 3 doors would be fine too. I do have something in mind, but won;t share that with you just yet, as i haven't driven one yet.

Have fun, but be gentle with me smile

and it's a no to MX 5 laugh

BTW
i head off up to Blackpool at 06:00 tomorrow, getting back Sunday afternoon, so won't be checking in here until later on Sunday.

Thanks Stevieb, a very good car, but not for me. I've now highlighted an important aspect of the choice.
No estates - please.

S3 - 4WD check, fast(ish) and fun check, comfortable check, not to flash check (just don't get a yellow one). hehe

A non lairy coloured Evo might be the way forward if you can put up with servicing.

However I reckon you could get a cracking S6 for that kind of money, might be a big bigger than you wanted, but it's a LOT of car for then money and it'd mean you'd still have 3 V8s wink

I would second this, but I'd be accused of double-standards, and banned from PH for mentioning the dreaded 'MX-5' answer.

So I won't second this fingers crossed

If I ever needed a practical car, I'd get an E55 AMG estate (if only for the 5.5 litre V8).

John_r has got it in one. An R32 is exactly what i was thinking about (with or without hoody smile ) Relatively sedate looking, but ideal fr those wet week-end hoons.

Any of you had one, and if so is there anything i should particularly look out for?

Cheers chaps

Well it's got pretty much the same 4WD gubbins and gearbox etc. as my car, needless to say they're the only bits that haven't broken on my car yet, so you should be okay hehe

waits for gearbox / diff to break at some point in the next week rolleyes

Interesting matey.Perhaps you need to take me for a spin in yours, i hadn't considered an S3, but they shouldn't be ruled out.

The EVO, great car as it is, just isn't me, and the S6 is a bit big for now.
I've just sent an email enquiry on the R32 that John listed - we'll see tomorrow smile

I ran an Evo as a daily driver for nearly 2 years and it cost a fortune - probably 2-3 times the M5 in service bills!

I think that R32 is listed by a trader as well so they should trade-in?
