Moving house ... advise needed (from the Crowthorne posse)
Discussion
I'm not familiar with the housing options around Crowthorne, but the centre's quite nice and there's been quite a lot of development / 'improvement' along the High Street in the last couple of years. The thing that put my wife off buying in Crowthorne was the presence of Broadmoor (if you're house hunting in the area on a Tuesday morning, I think it is, you'll hear them testing the sirens there), although we're still not a million miles away from it! Mind you, we did end up moving away from Burghfield Common as she didn't like being sandwiched between the two Atomic Weapons Establishment sites (Burghfield and Tadley/Aldermaston).
We're in Finchampstead, which is a pleasant enough place. The village is in two parts really, with the old part being at the Eversley / Yateley end by the church, pub (Queens Oak) and cricket ground (The Village, The Ridges, Church Lane); this is where you'll find the really expensive properties! We're down towards the Barkham end which is the [comparatively] newer part (Nine Mile Ride, Barkham Ride, Finchampstead Road), but the access here is good for the schools and for the 'centre' of the village where the small selection of shops (convenience stores, bathroom shop, fish & chips, pharmacy, post office) are plus the fantastic Indian restaurant (Xenuk) and, apparently, equally good Chinese. The main disadvantage of being at this end of the village is the lack of a proper local to walk to, as it's a choice between cutting cross-country to the Queens Oak or a walk along Barkham Ride and Barkham Street (without pavements most of the way) to the Bull at Barkham.
Access to the M3 would be up Nine Mile Ride, over the A3095 and on to the A322, so not that different to Crowthorne. I think that the A322 towards the M3 gets pretty busy at peak times, but you'll find this from anywhere in the area.
Overall we're very happy with the area, and are also lucky in living in a particularly sociable bit with all the neighbours getting together every so often (Christmas, birthdays etc.).
Hope that helps a bit.

Another thumbs up from me for the chinese!
The A322 does get busy towards the M3 in the morning but, from my experience, if you hit it before 7:15 you are ok.
You can hear the siren at Broadmoor for miles around, but I'm usually at work on a Monday morning so it doesn't bother me, but I know that you can hear it over at Birch Hill in Bracknell. If it wasn't for the siren you wouldn't know the place was there really.

Mind you, I know another Crowthorne curry house which David introduced me to which I can recommend as well......;-)
Hello fellah, long time no see. How are you, where have you been?I could do with some beers and a ruby soon, when's the crowthorne bunch out next?
Sorry to stray off topic......
To bring it back, I can also recommend Arborfield as another area to look in. Some decent local pubs and relatively good links to M3 and M4.

Just down the road from my parents - Kiln Ride - if you see them give them a wave from me We're in Finchampstead, which is a pleasant enough place. Next time I'm along Kiln Ride I'll be sure to give your parent a wave!
