My Passat was £1600 with only 60k miles and I'll keep it until it dies (or I do, whichever comes first...!). Climate, FVWSH, electric everything, 20V engine, economical, cheap to service, etc, etc. It even has alloy wheels and a decent stereo!
Obviously if you get an E39 you'll have to learn to drive properly as it's only 2WD...
Cerbera and a (semi) snotter, just get off your feckin arse and find a garage to rent or something.
Christ you never know, if I sell our house and do end up moving house in the next few months, and if it ends up in your neck of the woods, I might even have a spare garage space you could stick a Cerb in... ...would also give me a donor car to snaffle bits off when mine breaks afterall

It needs to be comfortable enough to do trips like the one last year and whatever might be coming up this year which again rules out things I don't really fit in etc.
