M3 northbound this afternoon around 17:45, near junction 5ish, grey 3 series, looked to have been having the ol' 3 point chat on the hard shoulder.

Bet it was EX64 GNJ. Seems to be it's hunting ground right there.

Out of interest, what do people look for these days/biggest giveaways?

The days of 15 extra aerials, clip on extra wing mirrors, same reg prefix's etc seem to be gone unfortunately and it's damn hard.

Even some models are wildcards like surrey had a 4 series coupe at one point in dark blue, wouldn't have known at all, save for it was on display at wings and wheels one year.

We've never had a 4 series coupe, if it was at wings and wheels, then it was a demo from BMW, or a loan from somewhere else. I think BMW were asked about any special vehicles they had, so this may have been one of them.

We don't need the extra aerials now, as most of it goes through the shark fin on the roof, or tucked away. Only extra ones, are for tracker and that's small and discreet. For us, it's usually something German, quick and tinted windows smile

What's the thought process on that ? Would have thought the modern 2.0d's would be more than adequate for 99% of situations?

Is it true, or has it ever been that the police are allowed to make up their own number plates, hence the lack of the usually mandatory dealer particulars at the bottom of the plate?

Dealer text is not mandatory, just the postcode where it was made and the BS numbers. These can be very faint and almost invisible anyway (Halfords plates for example)

I usually look for SE trim but often with xenons, tints, plain plates, riding a bit low and more than one person in the car (I think?) Also if you can spot a 3 series is a 330d (twin pipes, though now 320d's have this too) and it is in SE trim this is fairly unusual as I'd say most civilian cars over here are more likely to be be M Sport (don't see any/many plod M-Sport) with base engines or SE trim with base engines.

Surveillance cars have ghost plates, they switch them every time the car gets blown out (or at regular intervals)
Regular unmarked cars don't bother, they are just plain cars, not covert ones and don't need it.
We stopped running GX plates on our ones a few years ago

Anyone know what was going on at J10 this morning in rush hour? My other half said just as she went past a highways car it put on a rolling roadblock behind her. A couple of minutes later several unmarked cars with blues and twos went past rapidly.

Weirdly though she says no cars caught up to her for the next couple of junctions so the block must have been on for a while.
