on my rare journeys along M25, J12-15+ (5-6 times a year), i sometimes check the backs of the gantries on the other [direction] side and the gantries never seem to have anything remotely camera/box-like installed....? i never blast through above 80, but have never had a ticket for exceeding 70... if there are cameras, do they really only pick up 80mph/93mph+ speeds?

James,
A bit of light reading, this is a review of my radar detector, note they test it on an M25 Gantry and seek confirmation that other cameras in a 2 mile radius are not working:

And a bit taken from snoopers.co.uk:

Q What is a Gatso Camera?

A These are the grey boxes you see at the side of the road facing away from you. They work on K band radar and take your picture when you pass (if you are breaking the speed limit). They are not always switched on , some being empty shells, do not always have film in. They are so named after Gatsometer, a Dutch company that invented them and manufactures most of them. They are by far the most common speedtrap device in use in the UK.

I think we are confusing ourselves over how we define switched on.

I define switched on as having film in them.

But regardless of whether there is film in them or not, all gatso's should flash if you pass through the lines at speed, i.e the radar system is always switched on no matter whether there is film in them or not.

I now for certain that is the case. So my original point was that your snooper would detect all the gatso's that had active radar (which would be most) but not necessarily know which if any had film in them.

Were getting there,
I agree my snooper detects all Gatsos with active radar.

I agree it cannot tell if they have film in. (although I thing its safe to assume that only the ones with active radar will have film in).

The only difference is that from driving around with a radar detector in the car for the past 5 years, in my experience only around 30% of Gatsos have active radar. (and no tickets yet touch wood, apart from the one from a truvelo but thats another story). This includes the gantries on the M25.

Interesting. I have always been scared of the M25 camera's because I don't understand them. People sail through at 3 figure speeds without a care in the world, and nothing ever flashes. Maybe they only have radar working when there is film in the camera, possibly a different setup to other gatso's. No idea.

I remember talking to someone involved with the Thames Valley scameras and they said that only about 30% of gatso sites in the thames valley actually had cameras in them because they couldn't cope with the quantity of admin if they put cameras in all of them, so they moved them around between the sites etc. I think there's a fair chance that if there's a camera in a gatso the radar will be on even if there's no film.

I don't think that included the M25 section though.

Anywho, I find the best way now is if there is any doubt make sure you're doing the posted speed limit at the time - I find it works well whistle

Ties in with what I've found pretty much everywhere I've been.
