Right, well as I will be working in the engineering industry for a year before uni, and i'll have a bit of money, I want to upgrade the KA to something with a sporting edge.
Still, bear in mind I will be 19 when I get the car insured, so insurance is a very important issue (For a group 5 car it'll be about £1-1.5k fully comp).
I want a car that could be used on hoons, but I think that's not gonna be possible for a couple of years yet. It also has to cost less than five grand.
Lets see what you can come up with!

As sh!t as it sounds how about a 1.6 or 1.4(can't remember which)toyota yaris pocket rocket for little money go and rent one for a day and give it some wellie you'll be surprised! 2004 RENAULT CLIO 2.0 16V Renaultsport 182 Cup 3dr
Good as standard and easily tuned for more:
2002 FORD FOCUS 2.0 ST170 3dr Hatchback
Insurance

Could also get an EVO IV or V in that proce range, but insurance will start outpacing the price of the car with those things - and they're expensive to run!

205 Gti, 309? easily stripped and shouldn't break the bank on insurance. otherwise clio 172 but i can see insurance been silly but shop around and you may be lucky as i know people similar age to you have pulled it off for around the 1k mark.

Depends how much of his budget he is willing to spend on insurance. Could get the car for around £3.5k I expect, but insurance is going to be over £1k.How about a Saxo VTS/VTR (whichever is more insurance friendly?!) or a 106 GTI. I know Saxos' have a terrible image but if you can get over that they are supposed to be a hoot to drive. 106 is basically the same thing but slightly more expensive I believe.
205 GTI would be a bit of old school cool for sure
I'd love to drive one just to see if they live up to the hype. I'd be slightly concerned about reliability if it had to a daily driver.Edited to change my overly optimistic pricing of a 172!

You don't have to be going at Mach 3 to enjoy a hoon.....or so I've heard

Fun, fast-ish cars with a low insurance group is kinda tricky... Other cars maybe worth considering off the top of my head:106 Quiksilver IG5
Saxo VTR IG7
Fester Zetec S IG7
VW Lupo 1.4 Sport/Seat Arosa Sport IG6

I reckon the MX5 is a great idea actually.
Insurance at 19 is going to be crazy for most things, i'm certain an MX5 would be cheaper than a 106 GTi for example.
And an MX5 is great fun, ridiculously reliable, cheap to fuel when you're not hooning and pretty good when you are, and will prepare you for a future of rwd "hairy chested" cars. Still simple enough that you can do most things yourself too, like brake pads and oil changes and so on.
I cut my rwd teeth on a Ford Capri and an MG Midget - not "fast" cars by today's standards but taught me a great deal and were HUGE fun.

MX-5 is a possibility although it might be a bit uncompromising as a daily driver. The insurance would still be over £2000 on one of those though (stupid slough postcode!).
Clio 172 is way too much to insure in this area unfortunately - it'll be over 4k, the price of the car!
Ford SportKA seems like a good choice, insurance could be as little as £1300, and they're supposed to be good fun. Only problem is it's probably too slow to keep up on hoons.
