I looked at a car at the factory a few months back.

It was clear then that it is more a built kit car than a production standard car in terms of design, fit and finish. The main let down was the ripples in the body and the front lights etc. I think autocar reviews have skirted over this and it does look better in photos than close up because of it. The main plus was the overall shape which I like and the strength of the chassis and integrated cage. More race car than road car. I also liked the overall Ginetta set up and facilities. The size however was marginal for me and would IMHO be suitable only for someone under 6ft. This and the somewhat under developed / finished product meant I won't be ordering now.

I also think Ginetta need a new sales person. No returning calls or emails is unacceptable communication (never sent me a final pricelist as promised and chased twice). It wasn't just me either but happened to someone else I know that was interested also and they gave up on them.

However I will be following with interest and never say never.

More please!

Are they not covering in the front lights?

(thanks by the way)
I assume they changed because most of the early cars with covers always seemed to be misted up inside.

The G40R is a race car for the road, fit and finish are slightly better than a race car - not much. The car is 200 bhp and around 850kg, it has a full FIA roll cage and FIA bag tank..... It can be driven from the factory directly to a race track and entered into a competition.
The comments about bodywork are correct as the car is not painted... As per the race cars as this would just add weight and cost.... You can have it painted at extra cost but no one does.
I'm 6'2" and won the class at the Britcar 24 hour race in it after driving it to Silvertone.... But it is very "cosy!" for anyone over 6'.
Getting in and out is difficult due to the car having full FIA approved side impact bars but all race cars are.

Ultimately if you want a car you can use on the road, track and race it is brilliant fun and we've spent the money on excellent race engineering of the chassis and race components.... We are only intend building 100 G40R cars per year for world wide sales and most of this years production is sold.

I can only apologise about the sales team not returning calls.

Come and drive one of the production cars with more power, they are great fun

Cheers

Not currently as road cars, but if they were supplied as race cars I'm not sure what people would used them for......

How suitable would you think they might be for fast/fun road use - twisties, B roads etc? Too noisy and uncomfortable and too skittish on poorer road surfaces?

The prototype was tested by Autocar, here's the video. Noise like this is half the fun!

That's a shame as my choices here are: corvette, camaro, mustang, challenger, boxster or Z4. Not one of them is anything special.

'Road' track racing is becoming quite popular. We have a good circuit near us: http://msrhouston.com/ They'd probably take a few as they currently use a lot of MX5's. Track racing is considered more the 'rich mans' sport with Ovals and dirt tracks still the most popular. There is a surge towards road tracks though with some grass roots racing like the lemons series.

But this is the US where volume is king - there is always someone who will buy your product.

Don't westfield do reasonable business over here?

Oh that fun's OK smile - it's the comment about needing to use noise cancelling earphones at autoroute speeds above that would concern me. I need to do a reasonable amount of M-way and dull A road to get to the interesting roads unfortunately.

It's a very good looking little car. I bet it will be a real hoot on the roads.

If it gives the catersevens a run for their money as a track car with road ability then I suspect there'll be a healthy number of people who will prefer it to a seven style car.

And Ultima, Superformance (South Africa), and Caterham - just the vehicle must be sold as a "roller" without transmission and engine. There's no way these cars like the G40 could be sold as Federalized cars but they could be sold as described and then be street legal bounce I wonder if in a few years when things settle down Ginetta can determine if providing partial kit/roller cars is possible. There's that Zolft which is very similar to the G40 and they keep saying they will take order for the US and have 2 distributors.

The apparently production version still looks fairly nice i guess but i really prefer the covered headlights look. Makes it look much less kit car-ish.

I agree, the lights don't do the car any favours, and even at a target of 100 cars per year I think they will struggle with the quality levels and price point. Lets hope it works out though, the thought of another Brit sports car maker going under makes me feel physcially sick!
