Unless the steel wheels are designed for competition, I'd stick with the alloys as ordinary steel wheels have quite a lot of flex and may develop fatigue fractures particularly around the stud holes. This might not be a problem if the tyres are narrow period types, but modern rubber is capable of delivering much larger loads into the hubs and suspension than was the norm in the '60s.

the wheels im looking at are a spun forged aluminium, specifically for racing applications in cars weighing less than 700kg. they are the best ive found in terms of strength and weight- around 3.5 kg or less. (they just resemble a steel in their appearance)geeeman said:

here the 14 x 6 minilite magnesium is listed as 4.5 kgs, 15 inch is 4.7kg. Guess the 13 could be around 4kg

ok small update...
pretty disappointed with the engine work done by Scholar in suffolk
i paid them to do a race engine build for the G4.
I never received a dyno sheet, and i never received a list of the work done. also had many issues with oil surge, until they correctly baffled the sump.
after months of asking i finally received a vague spec
we were told they acheived 133+ BHP from it
However, looking inside the engine, and after having the car on the RR, its closer to 110 bhp, and has mostly standard internals.
engine has now gone over to Joe at Throbnozzle racing...

What's the normal owner's tolerance on rolling roads? They must be all vary a little, depending on whether the RR operator has just built the engine, or wants the work to rebuild it. Bit like the penny on the underside of the grocer's scales.
If it's a 1500 pre-X, then a real 130 would have been pretty optimistic, surely.

hi Paul, this was to be the first race.. however we have a small leak from the rear axle, and the engine is still with throbnozzle. it should be back in the car next week, then testing in june. So looks like first outing may be July at brands
But i will be at silverstone on saturday, supporting the ginettas racing. There were 3 G4s entered for saturdays race, but Justin murphy is no longer able to make it. Will be nice to see the newly restored G4 of Dave Bowland making its debut in HRS

we had very limited testing before the race due to some probs with oil surge , sump was rebaffled on friday and hoping all would be ok for the race. It was the full GP circuit so quite alot to learn in one day
qualified 9th behind the G4 of Patrick ward-Booth, finished 8th out of 32, behind mostly elans and lotus 7s. Patrick came 5th
