Interesting to read people's experience with real-world fuel economy. I'm toying with the idea of an ST2 as my daily, at the moment I do about 20k a year and a fair few long (150-mile +) motorway journeys. I have a diesel at the moment which averages about 45mpg - I'm not expecting anything like that, but when you consider that petrol is cheaper than diesel per litre, I'm wondering how much of a difference I'd actually see. I'm a pretty gentle motorway driver, it's rare I go over (indicated) 80.

How is it on long journeys? Quiet-ish? Comfortable? A friend of mine has a Mk2 ST and the seats in it are fantastic, are the Mk3 Recaros as good?

Very comfortable long distance car although it took me a while to find the perfect driving position.
On a long run the trip computer shows @ 33mpg (not checked if accurate) although you could probably do better than me laugh

Good to know, thanks. A bit of rough man-maths based on 45mpg in the diesel and 33mpg in an ST, taking into account the price difference of the two fuels, shows an annual extra fuel charge of around £800 over 20k miles, which isn't too terrible.

My E39 is an excellent motorway cruiser but its too big and rolly to really have any fun in when I'm on the A and B roads. My MR2 takes care of the fun stuff at the mo, but I'm considering chopping that in for a Westy or similar which would probably result in less 'fun-car' miles, and it'd be good to have something that can be lots of fun (and good for the occasional Euro trip) as my main car.

your problem will be the urban mileage, your diesel will still manage 40 odd, the ST will drop into the 20's. for me that doubles my fuel costs. a 15mpg drop when i went to my r32 meant an extra fillup a month, and i do ~10k a year. a 10mpg increase going to a mk7 GTI has meant i'm using roughly 3/4 a tank less a month.

50 odd quid a month, negligible, but adds up to £600ish a year!

Fortunately I do very, very little urban milage. I live in the countryside and my commute to work when I'm in the office is 20 miles along some A-roads and the M40. When I'm visiting customer sites again it is almost always long motorway journeys (1-200 miles) and this happens maybe once or twice a week often outside of peak rush-hour times. Whenever I work in London I get the train.

TBF the e39 is pretty thirsty around town, it's a big old lump to get moving!

Would you say you have a heavy right foot?
I know the official figure is 28.5, but the official figure for my 182PS Focus is 37.2 and i can get into the 40's without much trouble when taking it easy around town, so im hoping i will get into the 30's when i get my ST. smile

I'm sure its possible to eek out a little more, but lets be honest, do i want to drive a Golf GTI like miss daisy, or a GTD normally?

to answer your question, I drive it sensibly, I make progress where possible, i stick within the speed limit, I have a DSG car and keep it in eco so not really high revs. I live with the mpg

Sorry i thought you currently drive a Mk.3 Focus ST and were speaking from experience regarding urban fuel consumption.
