Ah, forgot to mention-the bluefin made the insurance skyrocket. Could only go with Adrian Flux. 5 years no claims, and I still paid £90.00 per month. With the st220, I pay £40.00 per month. Offsets the fuel costs somewhat! :P

I own a Mondeo ST TDCI with 93k miles on the clock and I have done about 3k miles in it since September 2013. I previously owned an E46 BMW 320d M sport and did 30,000 miles in that.

The mondeo ST TDCI is a much better car to drive than the beemer. The handling is very poised (I have lowered mine on Eibach springs (an OE item from Ford)), the steering sharp and precise, and brakes are 'old skool' good. That means that they appear to have less servo assistance and you have to press the pedal firmly to slow the car. They still work great though and you do not need Focus ST brake upgrade, unless your going to be doing trackdays in it.

I have had no problems with injectors, DMF or anything else, but the previous owner did replace the EGR valve six months before I bought it. Problems happen on all cars, but internet skews the reality, because people only post about problems, but not when the car is running correctly. Mine so far has been as good as gold.

The ST TDCI is not an ugly cousin of the petrol version (as a previous poster has said) it is the same externally except that it has one exhaust instead of two. The body kit and colours are the same. You can even get ST TDCI with full leather recaros (rather than half leather that I have)

Importantly, my friend has just done 234k in his ST TDCI and its still on original clutch and injectors! He bought the car with 90k miles on a few years back, but does mainly motorway miles.

Buy one in good condition and ask the owner what type of miles it does. If it well looked after and has done mainly motorway miles, then I am sure the car will be fine (like mine has been so far).

Even for a diesel it really is a fun car to drive....mine is standard engine wise, but its a strong engine and pulls nicely in all gears. The handling is immense from a big car and I do take mine regularly on A&B roads and am never disappointed with it.

With you on this one^^^^^^^
Have had a ST TDCI for the past 6 months or so. Purchased it off my brother as a cheap daily hack. Has 215,000 miles on the clock. Full ford service history shows cluth and dual mass flywheel at 180k, 3egr valves and injectors.otherwise just normal wear and tear items.

Yes can sound a bit rough when cold and 1st gear too low but otherwise a good car. Average 37mpg on my daily 11mile each way commute 1/2 motorway and then mixture of town and A road but history of every tank full from new shows an average of about 42mpg. (my brother needs a dog collar for the way he drives. Once saw a 52 mpg on a very steady run down to Cornwall following a caravan but this was an exceptional circumstance and not a rule.

Watch out for self levelling rear dampers though. £300 each just for parts.

I suppose this is as good a place to start as any...

Been a member for years, but never posted!

When the petrol prices shot up and I was averaging 25k miles per annum I was driving a lovely e39 528i sport.

However 26mpg and a pending marriage were not a sensible partnership. The lower/upper trail arms E39 issues always were a pain in the neck, so I decided I'd switch to diesel.

Budget wise the St tdci 2.2 mondeo ticked all the boxes. I searched around and found one that had sat nav and the leather recaro's.

Other than feeling that the suspension and brakes had been removed, I soon got used to averaging 50mpg.

4 years later and 85k miles later, it proved to be the right move.

Yes I've had to fork out for an EGR after my Mondy went into limp home mode, but touch wood I've not seen the dreaded injector issues.

I had to replace the clutch at about 150k miles, but I can't complain about that.

My circumstances have changed now and my new job only requires 6k per annum and my fuel economy has dropped from 600 miles per tank down to about 400, and I'm now looking to switch back to petrol.

The mondy hasn't really cost me much in ownership, and I'm up to 175k miles now. I'm looking to scratch my v8 itch, but am happy to wait to switch to the right car,

Heated windscreens rock! My air con hasn't worked for about 3 years, but I just open the window. I keep meaning to get it fixed, but dealership always conveniently forget.
